A lot of people complain about BYOND being full of idiots. Well, after looking at quite a few forums and the like on many other sites that are much more popular than BYOND, I can safely say that BYOND has the best discussions and arguments of all, because people here are actually intelligent!
Maybe it's because I mainly only pay attention to people I know well here, but BYOND holds the most intelligent discussions out of any community I've seen.
Here is how an argument goes down on just about any other site I've seen on the web, for just about every discussion:
User0: [opinion]
User1: I completely agree.
User2: User1, you dumbass, you're wrong if you don't believe my blatently biased opinion.
User1: [valid opinion]+[flame]
User2: I worked in [insert related profession here] for 7 years, I think I know exactly how it works. Oh, and any people under the age of 30 don't have valid opinions.
User1: Conservative moron.
User2: Liberal dumbass.
User1: [Insert embarrassing opinion to agree with because of the way he typed it here]
User2: I am a computer programmer. I know EVERYTHING.
User1: I made this website [insert me-too link here]. I do too.
User3: I have nothing to do with this discussion, but I will butt in just long enough to tell User1 that I raped his mother. Oh, I have been a computer programmer for 157 years also so User2 is right.
User2: [insult about User1 being biased ignoring that User2 is even more biased]
User1: I am so pissed off right now I will now make threats against the lives of User2's family and say I will urinate on their corpses.
User2: I'm more pissed off, so I'm going to get off the computer and do my Algebra 1 homework.
User1: I win.
Now, here is an argument on BYOND (At least the kind I pay attention to):
User1: [lengthy, intelligent opinion]
User2: [biased opinion so convincing you think about converting]
User1: [Rant about his opinion being biased]
Xeal: lolzlolz
User2: [Apology for sounding biased, alternative opinion offered that is in-between both opinions]
User1: [Apology and agreement]
I guess what makes me hate these other communities a lot more is that instead of people you'd expect to act immature, like kids and clowns like are on BYOND, they're all friggen' grown men acting like little children.

I have learned that BYOND is the place for me because it is one of the few places on the Internet that I can't walk in and convince everyone I am a computing God. I don't stand out here, which is a nice change. Going into public forums I am normally far more mature, intelligent, and more willing to listen to others with valid opinions.
I can't count the number of times I have had my ass handed to me by Lummox/Nadrew/Lexy/Lexy/Lexy. Of course, I always had it coming for sticking my foot in my mouth in the first place, but it is nice to be called on a bluff or outsmarted. If it wasn't for BYOND, I would probably think I was a computer God (I get told it by normal people almost daily). Sure, BYOND does have its trolls. And it has people that aren't so much trolls as annoying. But those people are just the loudest. I just ignore those type of people. Hell, I haven't seen a post or blog from Elation in like months, I think it is just because I have become so good at ignoring him that I don't even see when he says something. | |

I have no comment.... If I've bothered you in the past...well, I don't know what to say. An apology would have no substance, since I can't remember. I'm trying to be better behaved again, if that means anything. Lately I've been too much of a crabby asshole to everyone, and even I'm getting sick of me. Of course, the intelligent thing to do would've been to not get the way I've been in the first place. :/ As for you, Kunark, I don't think I've ever given you a proper apology over my mouthing off a few weeks ago. What you said about only paying attention to people you know well, though...I can see how that would put different lights on Byond's community and others. If you took someone from another popular forum and asked him to look at Byond, he'd probably see the same thing but in favor of ihs own forum. I guess it's really just who you know.
