The expressions "free rein" and "rein in" both use that last one. Santa likes to give his reindeer free rein, but sometimes he has to rein them in.

As for "et al.", literally meaning "and others", it's one of my favourite expressions. ;-)
Gads, the rein/reign thing drives me frickin' nuts. I can't believe how often I see "free reign", which I think comes from people thinking the expression means to rule freely rather than being about horses.
