Who here has been sitting around at three in the morning, too sick of their own projects to work on them, refreshing the forum every fifteen seconds thinking "Come on.. reply.. I can't be the only person awake, can I?"

If I recall, "hi" takes up something like 16 bytes, which is a lot less than a post like this does.

Yes, but more is stored than just those two letters. And any space that can be saved is space that can be used for the really important things, like:

Technically, "hi" would take up two bytes -- 'h' and 'i'.

Yep, that one is correct -- two bytes is sixteen bits.
