Oh I see. Thats good. Because those are most likely the only 2 games I'll ever be playing now.
Agreed, its one of the only games on byond that looks and feels like.. well a commercial game.
It's brilliant.
"Here we have people wasting time on 3D or isometric games that will never work..."

Your overgeneralizations still make me cringe.
didn't try it yet, but it doesn't look that impressive in my eyes. i still think Mano A Mano is the best byond game. :p
Rarely do you see a BYOND game that looks and plays like a professional game. Well here you have it: the most professional looking game on BYOND.

What about Leftley's Lode Wars?
Sound good! Can't wait to try it.

You're wrong though that there aren't any good Turn-based Strategy games on BYOND. There are a few decent-to-good ones. And after making one myself, I can tell you they do fit BYOND like a glove just like you said. My only complaint is BYOND forces such small graphics that it was a pain in the ass to make good looking spell effects.

Is this UP's infamous Unnamed TBS game? Or is it his GIAD entry?
[edit]
Nevermind, I see his post now. It's the Unnamed TBS Game. I've played it before in its alpha stages, it looks very snazzy.

Well, instead of whining about it maybe you could provide a link to your game to see if it will change his mind.

I tried moving around in it for a couple of minutes. It looks interesting but having to rapidly tap the arrow keys to move anywhere got annoying, fast. Holding the key meant having a delay when starting to run and stopping. :/
SilkWizard:
As far as the ranking system goes: it doesn't mean a damn thing. Acheron's Awakening could be ranked #1 or #1000 and I wouldn't care less.

I agree completly. When it boils down to it, multiple owners have cheaply had their games boosted up by handing out items, stats, and anything in between in their games for the players who rank it on their list.

He's played it before.

I'm not saying V56 is a great game, and I do know BYOND's limitations, but saying it and all other pseudo-3D games will never work is going too far. I eagerly await each new BYOND update hoping for /anything/ that might be used to replace DrawBox() or make display manipulation even slightly more streamlined. Saying this will never be possible implies either lack of confidence in the coders and/or BYOND itself.

As far as making games that are 100% tailored to the system being used, that's great and all, but it doesn't mean all other games are wastes of time. Fortran is a programming language designed specifically to solve problems in math and science, yet it was used to create the first (and one of the most famous) text-based adventure games, ADVENT/Adventure/Colossal Cave Adventure. How's that for breaking the mold?

This was out of line for me to say. Sorry. I've been in a slump for a couple of months and it seems like I'm lashing out at anyone I talk to. :/

Your game is impressive, and is about as good as things are ever going to get in terms of BYOND. The only reason that it is impressive is because you made it with BYOND... which is tailored for tilebased games. That said, it will never be on the same level as games that don't try to force BYOND to do something it was never intended to do.

Yes, but we aren't living back in the early days of computers and gaming. There are plenty of languages out there way more suited for making 3D games, so why try to force one using DM?

You certainly wouldn't see someone wasting their time trying to make a tile-based RPG using a 3D game design program.
Oh yes, that unnamed TBS game! I totally forgot about that, I was going to try it someday...
You didn't answer my question. :(
wat about my game isnt my game da best?

Actually, I've contemplated doing that. :-) Doing 2D in a 3D engine isn't as stupid as it sounds; graphics hardware is accelerated for 3D these days. All you have to do is use an orthographic camera and ignore the third dimension and it works just fine.

I agree, though, that a 3D game written in BYOND will never be able to reach the same technical heights as a 3D game written in C++, or even Python or Java(!). The system just isn't flexible enough.
I could picture a good 3D BYOND game if it were based upon movement in steps (ala the early Ultima dungeons). Trying to do stuff in real time is just way too clunky in my opinion.
no

Ugh, I agree. There are too many limitations with our 32x32 pixel tile based graphics. I've seen some people go pretty far into graphics as far as color rate ( Dixon can make some pretty good 32-bit graphics ) But DM falters when it comes to having huge objects. (Multi-Tiled, Etc.) It's too complicated to get them working 100%, in my opinion, unless they dont require to operate fully in the game. ( Ex: a pretty overlay. ) I'd love to see a huge 5x6(Square) enemy who would walk around and try to crush me.

Soon Cliff...... Soon......
