Okay, Lexy gave me the idea for another thread.
And by the way, mine are:
American Gothic
This was a novel show about a small southern town in which the battle between good and evil played out through the residents. The sherrif was some minion of the devil, the local voodoo lady worked good magic, etc. It was sort of exciting and sexy and spooky. I think it lasted 1-2 seasons.
Freaks and Geeks
I was amazed when this got cancelled. Incredible writing, incredible child actors, so real it was painful to watch. I mean I would literally get a knot in my stomach watching the characters go through some of the same stuff I had to deal with in high school. Of course it was cathartic too. And all the characters were so interesting, especially the parents.
There are a number of good shows that got an early cancellation, but I think those are the two I was most upset about.

I loved American Gothic so much... that, and VR.5. Why must good shows die?

Well that's actually all I can think of... |

I liked American Gothic (Sam Raimi) and Freaks and Geeks.
I also liked VR.5. Getting cancelled was bad enough, but shoving the lead character into a coma... Grrrr. Unfortunately, that seems to be the normal routine for scifi on FOX. Which brings me to Freaky Links. Mulder and Scully minus the government junk. Find the weird stuff going on and report on it. (Kind of like The Chronicle... Will ther ebe more episodes of that?) What was that show on WB about the band that could speak to ghosts? I liked the few episodes I saw of that show. Did it maybe just get moved to UPN with other WB scifi? I also liked Jack of All Trades (Bruce Campbell - tee hee) and Cleopatra 2525. (I'd mention Brisco County, Jr... but the truth is I didn't watch it when it originally aired.) |

I didn't like Jack... but I loved Brisco. I was an early adopter there. See my comments in Buffy re: cross-genre.

When I was about 9 or 10, there was a show called "Quark" featuring Richard Benjamin as the captain of a spaceship that flew around the galaxy collecting space garbage. I imagine it was pretty silly, but at that age I thought it was a whole new direction in Art.

VR5 seemed sillier when it first started; I finally understood where the technology aspect was coming from near the end of the show, so by then it didn't seem dumb. (I thought at first she had software on her computer that was creating the entire environment, as the "VR" would seem to imply. I only later understood that something was sending audiovisual impulses that moved the brain into a different state of consciousness.) Still, I loved it. The conspiracy stuff was great, especially with Mr. Taster's Choice as Sydney's liaison with the Committee. The best episode to my mind was the one where Duncan used the system to call himself. That was genius. Lummox JR |
My two all-time favorites were killed by Fox's slot-o-death (Friday, 8-9 PM EST).
I was (and remain) a huge fan of the Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. Besides starring the incomparable Bruce Campbell, I loved Julis Carry's role. The storylines were clever and funny. Who ever would have thought that a sci-fi western could be one of the greatest TV shows ever made? Incidentally, people, I've read that Brisco will be hitting DVD as a boxed set this fall. I'm guessing that means November, since the best stuff never comes out early. (Speaking of DVDs, two of my favorite comedies will be out June 4: UHF and Men At Work. Both are silly but classic.) One other show I really liked, so good it assuaged anger over their first cancellation of Sliders, was Strange Luck. That show was always worth watching. Lummox JR |

When I finally gave it a chance and realized it was interesting, it was cancelled. One other show I really liked, so good it assuaged anger over their first cancellation of Sliders, was Strange Luck. That show was always worth watching. The Sliders roller coaster was terrible. It started out as a great show, kept getting canceled and transferred to other networks, until SciFi channel got ahold of it. With their new episodes, I was hoping it would be cancelled to preserve my memory of the good episodes! It was all downhill after the professor died. (I guess he just wasn't sexy enough to hold the audience's interest.) They did the same thing with Forever Knight, another favorite of mine. :( I was disappointed when Strange Luck was cancelled too. It reminded me very much of one of my World of Darkness characters. He was a plain mortal who had all 21 freebie points distributed among the various "lucky" traits. Jack of all trades, Charmed existence, daredevil, self confident, etc. He was incredibly fun and always managed to pull out of the most outlandish situations by the skin of his teeth. In the game revisions after I made him, I believe White Wolf had a specific rule against making a character like him. Come to think of it, they did that to a number of my characters. Was I abusing the rules, or was there just a incredible influx of banality into the third edition books? |

When I finally gave it a chance and realized it was interesting, it was cancelled. It's definitely worth your time to pick up the DVDs when they come out--or rent them. Brisco was always in search of "the coming thing", and he had all kinds of great adventures in the process of rounding up John Bly's gang. For a rough synopsis of the show's premise, here it is: Brisco County, Jr. was the son of a US Marshall killed by the 13-man gang of the notorious outlaw John Bly. Bly has been in search of a mysterious object discovered by captive Chinese mine workers called "the orb"; this object gave them the power to break free of their chains and escape. Brisco, and a bounty hunter named Lord Boelher (I hope I spelled that right--it's been a long time), begin the process of tracking down each member of Bly's gang and eventually Bly himself. The show takes place in 1893-94 (that is, 100 years before it aired), so there were quite a few "coming things" then: One of the fun recurring characters was a rocket scientist played by John Astin. :( Gads yes. I never watched Forever Knight, but Sci-fi just vomited all over Sliders. Sliders had plenty of stupid moments, and they never really adequately explained the physics of the show, but it was a lot of fun. (The 2-hour series premiere was breathtakingly good, unnerving in a very profound way.) I was disappointed when Strange Luck was cancelled too. Was I abusing the rules, or was there just a incredible influx of banality into the third edition books? I never got into roleplaying like that, but it does sound to me that a character like that would be so entertaining as to make any game ten times more fun. This is after all why we watch TV, isn't it? We see people get into and out of scrapes we know are beyond anything that could ever happen to us. Lummox JR |

Yes, that show was on at the point where "virtual reality" was a buzzword being used to explain anything in bad science fiction... I thought the first episode made it pretty clear that they weren't going that route, though. I think that's why the show died, actually. The name promised mindless drivel and didn't deliver.
