Well, I've seen on the BYOND forums, we've been having some arguements over what is bad and what is good in music. I'd like to share my thoughts (again =P) on this.
Let's listen to some of the rock lyrics, to see what is so offending or not offending.
First off, rock lyrics:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject one:
-----------------------------------------------------------
I've felt the hate rise up in me...
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves...
I wander over where you can't see...
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed...
---Slipknot - Wait and Bleed.
Nothing wrong with that.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject two:
-----------------------------------------------------------
F**K IT ALL! F**K THIS WORLD!
F**K EVERYTHING THAT YOU STAND FOR!
DON'T BELONG! DON'T EXIST!
DON'T GIVE A S**T!
DON'T EVER JUDGE ME!
---Slipknot - Surfacing.
Wow, very very hateful towards everyone
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now for the rap music. I will not be prejudice towards rap music because I favor rock =P
-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject one:
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you wanna go and take a ride wit me
We three-wheelin in the fo' with the gold D's
Oh why do I live this way? (Hey, must be the money!)
If you wanna go and get high wit me
Smoke a L in the back of the Benz-y
Oh why must I feel this way? (Hey, must be the money!)
---Nelly - Rid Wit Me.
Talking about how he loves money. (And so do all we =D)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject two:
-----------------------------------------------------------
See now you could be a lady or a bitch girl
Still, you're thicky thicky thicky thick
Lookin like a lolli-pop waitin for the lick girl
You're thicky thicky thicky thick
Remind me of my 6-4 waitin at the switch girl
You're thicky thicky thicky thick
Could be a crime that I'm waiting to commit girl?
You're thicky thicky thicky thick
---Nelly - Thicky Thick Girl.
Very offensive towards women and dehumanizing them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I know GreenDice is going to respond and say something like 'You white suicidal rock artist goth freak' to me. Heh, I dont care, really. You can see the differences between both rock and rap, the good and the bad. So no one is more offending than another, its just the mood of the song. But, of course, each artist has their own style of rock/rap. Some only throw out swear words. Some have truthful meanings.
Share your thoughts, everyone!

Everything is offensive to someone.

This is a bit off topic but I like:
System of a down, NIN, Rob Zombie, Korn, Rammstien I dont like it when an artist screams to the point I cant understand what they are saying. =P :) |
Two groups don't prove anything. However, what pains me more is that most (if not all) of the bands being mentioned between the two threads are MTV junk. Sex and violence sell. It's just marketing. There is little difference between rap and rock.
If you don't give up easily, you can find plenty of music, free and legal (buy their albums direct and support them), from artists that are not played on tv. Many of them are quite good. I tend to lean towards rock offerings, but I was a fan of rap before MTV shoved it down my throat constantly. |
If we want to talk strictly stereotypes:
Modern Rock: I hate money, I live for this woman, I hate myself, I want to kill myself. Modern Rap: I love money, women live for me, I hate you, I'm going to kill you. Neither stereotype is particularly appealing... but neither is universally true, either. Especially if you listen to more than what MTV and most radio stations give you to listen to. (I always thought MTV's Total Request Live was a joke... you get to pick which 10 of the 9 songs currently in their playlist get played.) A good rap song doesn't prove that "rap is better than rock," and a good rock song doesn't prove that "rock is better than rap." |

However, for some reason, I liked Dial MTV back when Adam Curry was hosting it. Unfortunately, I can't figure out if it was because the process was any better or the people were simply less annoying. |
You couldnt have chosen a worse song to post lyrics of try...
Renegade - Jay-Z Featuring Eminem (WARNING IF YOUR IMMATURE AND WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT CURSING DO NOT READ) Since I'm in a position to talk to these kids and they listen I ain't no politician but I'll kick it with 'em a minute Cause see they call me a menace; and if the shoe fits I'll wear it But if it don't, then y'all'll swallow the truth grin and bear it Now who's these king of these rude ludicrous lucrative lyrics Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics usin his music to steer it sharin his views in his marriage But there's a huge interference - they're sayin you shouldn't hear it Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish But I'm debated disputed hated and viewed in America as a motherfuckin drug addict - like you didn't experiment?
