BYOND has been around for a while, so why don't I see many epic rpgs?
The only big RPG I've seen is MLAAS, and Another up and coming one that I like is a game called Leaders. Also FQO will be out one of these days. There aren't really any big games. Just small games.
Most of the other games are either DBZ or small. Not that small isn't good. Its just I would like something that I can spend my time with. MLAAS is a perfect example.

Two problems with anything "epic": time investment and maintanence. OK, so technically that's just two sides to the same problem, but you get the picture. A graphical RPG requires LOTS of graphics or else it gets bland; a text RPG similarly requires massive wads of writing. Either way it's not something particularly appealing to most developers; MLAAS is a fairly "light" RPG, and as Skysaw can attest even that can easily be an overwhelming amount of work. And the game "Leaders" (I still hope that's just a tentative title), while possessing a nice interface and a reasonably good engine, is definitely lacking in the game world department--the game's been in development for weeks and the world (that's open to players, at least) consists of one area about 20x20 tiles!

BYOND has been around for a while, so why don't I see many epic rpgs? I haven't the time nor the funds to maintain servers for a true MMORPG. (You won't be able to go truly massive on a single server, but BYOND is capable of multi-server games.) There are no technical limitations in BYOND keeping us from making something like (or better than) Dark Ages Online, a game I used to play slavishly for hours on end. I've never played Ultima Online, but I've heard of no features it has that couldn't be done in BYOND either. Another problem is the player base. I'd need several hundred people paying $10 a month to make it worth devoting my life to the game. I've had just under 50 subscriptions to Tanks this month, and I only charge 20 cents for that. When BYOND goes mainstream and there are more people playing and paying, it is more likely there will be people making larger RPGs. |

So, Nobody has any big hitters eh? There are lots of good games. Just not lots of good big or even "light" games. I woulda thought with the wave that was in last year of middlebies - gurus (Nadz,Foomer,BlackDeath,Vortezz,LoW,Sariat (the coolest one of them all)) would have got something "epic" done.
Just for fun, lets see what happened to them all: Nadz - made boring games Foomer - Crashed and burned with Enysa, but made a lot of money BlackDeath - Worked on lots of games, good features, but none complete Vortezz - Started few games, completed none Sariat -Crashed and burned also, learned lots though LoW -made a few things, nobody saw anything but TextMUD |

Hey, right now I could build an epic RPG if I wanted to, but the things that stand in the way are:
1. Lack of desire to build a game for idiots who don't appreciate it. 2. I don't want to build a game based on senseless killing. 3. Lack of anywhere to host it, and 56k's are evil. I'd be more inspired to build FoomerMUD (which could easily become "epic") if I had somewhere to host it permanantly and for free - and I had some people helping me out, because I don't want to write a bazillion descriptions all by myself. |

While I don't classify as a middlebie...
Spuzzum -started billions of things, completed none, restarted half from scratch, completed none. |

People might like to make games, but that's "games" as in plural. Being an administrator counts for arguably most of the work in an online RPG. That time could be spent making another game that requires less upkeep. |

Dark Ages Online Ahh, Nexon: the company of Kings. Nexon made Dark Ages, which also made Nexus: TK, the game I played vigorously for hours on end before I discovered BYOND. =V |
