Wow, I haven't checked my email since February 19 :) I got 1182 messages between then and March 27, when my ISP stopped accepting email because my box was full. I really need to get on a regular email schedule.
When i had aol i would get about 30 junk mails a night, very irratating, when you go away for vacation and dont have a computer with you.

Since posting about 10 hours ago, I got 67 new messages, bringing my inbox unread message total to 12183 :P

Of those 67:

  • 8 are for 50-75% off printer ink
  • 6 have to do with mothers day gifts
  • 16 offer some type of 'free' gift (+shipping of course)
  • 4 porn sites offering 'free' memberships
  • 13 credit repair/credit card/refinancing type things
  • 12 miscellaneous items of no interest to me
  • 5 items which seem to be from sites I (vaguely) remember visiting
  • 3 messages I actually requested (mailing lists, updates, etc.)

Sort of sad... reminds me why I stopped checking my email

yeah...i know what you mean, and most of he junk mail i got were ones if you sent the mail back with "Remove" in the title they would remove you form the mailing list, but when i did that, the same place would email me but with a different serial number, so if serail #1221367 would email you and you replied with "Remove" whey would just switch to another and send again....very annoying.

Generally, the best way to unsubscribe is to set up a mail filter. Many companies that don't make disclaimers to their mailing list service have the tendency to forward your email address to other companies, for a price, if you unsubscribe from them. Sometimes they just sell your email address anyway.

Whatever you do, NEVER reply to spam. If someone is manually spamming your email, then if you don't reply they'll assume that the address is no longer valid. Automatic spam is of a nature that they really could care less how many addresses aren't actually valid, since the computer will just send to them anyway.

You can, however, always insert "nospam" in your email address when you put it online... eg. spuzzum@spuzzum.(nospam).byond.com. Instant filter for automated ones, and manual ones have too little time on their hands to be able to fix it.

Naturally, however, you have to make people aware that they have to remove the nospam. I was bitten by that a couple times in my internet newbiehood.
