One category I might add: Some posts are bumped in the space of just a few minutes. The people who do that fall in the "I can't grasp that this isn't a real-time medium" group, and already have a strike against them for stupidity. People who bump within 20 minutes obviously expect an instant answer they're not going to get. People will chew them out not just to discourage their obnoxious behavior, but to give them a reality check that no, kid, you can't expect an answer in 30 seconds. Lummox JR |
So is it ok to bump a week old post?
(notice my 8 spell bubbles posts. I have been too afraid to bump an old one so I just make a new one) |

Okay thanks.
I was going to bring this up in: http://www.byond.com/forum/ forum.cgi?action=message_read&forum=newbie&message=17049&vie w=0 but I decided it wouldnt be appropriate to ask it there, Did I do the right thing? |

Okay thanks. It's probably better to leave that one alone. I have nothing to say on it myself because as bumps go, it's a moderate one; it was done about 9 hours later, but basically the next day, and for a problem that's a lot more urgent than someone asking a programming question. I consider that more or less borderline. Lummox JR |
No I ment is it better to talk about rules in a post like that or bring up a stand alone post in babble?

And if there's a specific thing you're asking for clarification on, may as well ask where it comes up. But for just a general query about forum rules like this, I think you were right to post a new thread in Babble. Lummox JR |
Most forums don't both having an official policy, but I do know that a lot of people frown on gratuitous bumping. The problem is this:
Person A posts a new thread. It's a busy bulletin board, and 4 hours later, the thread is near the bottom of the page. Uh oh! Person A decides to bump his post. Now Person B, who had an older and more important (in their opinion) post, sees theirpost being pushed to the bottom by the newly bumped post. So Person B bumps their post. Person C, seeing all the posts on top of his, decides to bump his post as well. Person D's post, which was above posts A, B, and C but is now on the second page because of their bumps, definitely decides to bump. Now take this process, extend it, and make it occur continually. What you have is a board where a significant chunk of the posts are mere bumps. This takes up bandwidth and space for the forum; if there weren't all these bump posts lying around, more actual, useful posts would fit on a page. Even if the forum only displays thread titles and not all the messages a thread contains, bumping still defeats the whole purpose of sorting posts by order of recentnes. Moreover, it's actually far, far less work for everynoe to scroll down a bit than it is for them to go in to all their posts and bump them. |
This reminds me of my old days at the Wizard World boards...
There were only two that I ever visited regularly... Anime General Discussion (AGD), and the DBZ board... At first it was just the DBZ board... But one day, due to some botched "maintenance"...the DBZ board (along with a few others) was deleted... So we migrated to the AGD board... After taking up residence there for a while...the DBZ board was discovered to exist in a backup directory of the site... So someone posted a thread on AGD directing everyone to the link so we could all move back to our "home" board...lol Well...the AGD was a very active place... And even with it only displaying thread titles...it still scrolls older threads off rather quickly... So for weeks...the faithful members of the DBZ board would bump that one post daily (sometimes hourly...lol) so the link would never be lost... We sort of turned it into a game... Bonus points to the person who most cleverly/humorously bumped it...and bonus to whomever's bump started a new page of replies...lol But in all honesty... No one ever complained on that board about our incessant bumping... Of course, that might just be because most of the other posts were active enough to keep surfacing no matter how many times we'd bump the thing... So it never really hurt anyone... |
Will someone explain to me why bumping is illegal? It's easy and inexpensive to produce, so it can't be taxed consistently. Also, it provides fodder for sensationalistic "human interest" stories, which in turn are viewed as justification for outrageous government budgets and the erosion of Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. |

Generally, no one will complain if you bump a question that has not been answered in 24 hours. 48 is certainly better.
The real question is why bump in less than a day? The people who are likely to give you a good answer to a question on this forum are reading all of the posts anyway. I can tell you for myself that I read almost every single post on the board, though I sometimes skip one if I can tell by the subject that I'm not the best person to answer the question. (Babble is another matter... I hit about 50% of the topics there).
So you see... a bumped question was already read or noted by those who have been to the board, and they have already passed on answering it. Those who have not yet seen it are the best bet for answering the question, but the first thing they'll see is a bumped post, and wonder why someone's being so impatient.
Everyone else will just see the post for a second time, and get annoyed.
