A stable release of FreeCraft (http://freecraft.net/) is available.

"The engine can be used to build C&C, WC2, SC and AOE-like real-time strategy (RTS) games. It successfully runs under Linux, BSD, BeOS, MacOS/X, MacOS/Darwin and MS Windows."

I've been waiting for this. Of course, I'll probably never make time to actually play.

PS: They are looking for artists and musicians. Don't be surprised if it doesn't look fantastic right now.
How open-ended is it? Could I build puzzle game or an adventure game with it? Or is it strictly designed for violent RTS games?

It's for RTS games. However, I imagine you can make them as non-violent as you want. You can provide the content.

Mind you, I didn't mention it as an alternative to BYOND anyway. The project has been going on for a while and I thought the availability of a stable engine was worthy of mention... It's a geek thing.

I'm not comparing it to BYOND, I just want to know (without finding out for myself) if it's capable of more than just eliminate-the-other-guy games, such as say a Lost Vikings type puzzle game or something like that.
