recently i saw chaos and evil used synonomously, in a single sentence. I was disturbed, that chaos could be considered evil. I know not what others consider chaos to be, but I consider chaos everything, everything in nature is so chaotic, nothing is ever a perfect cycle, the universe itself is chaos, worlds beginning and ending randomly every second. I think pure chaos is not evil, it is just an absense of order, most humans crave order, others dismiss it and accept their surroundings, rather than turn them into concrete hells.
DO you consider choas evil? Or do you consider them two seperate ideals?

Yes, true, I only asked this to see opinions, I played advanced for a while, when I was in 5th grade, but in 7th grade, I started a D&D group, of course, my first character was a neutral human fighter, easiest kind of character to play, but eventually, I began to play progressively darker characters, leaning towards evil, eventually I tired of playing evil, so I started a paladin, who I might add was quite a onesided character, so I got bored of him and got him killed (on accident) by refusing to run away from a horde of a thousand kobolds defiling the temple of Heironnius my deity at the time.
eventually, I stumbled upon a fascinating race, by mistake I might add, the Drow. I soon tried to buy two rapiers for him as his weapons, but they were far too expensive, so I bought two scimitars instead, and then made him a fighter, one of my favorite classes. Eventually, he became a fighter/bard, a flute-playing Drow bard. of course, his alignment became Chaotic Good. As an inside joke, my DM made him of the house Do'urden, I knew nothing of Drizzt at the time (a week later I bought the darkelf trilogy) eventually, however, the world was being ended by an insane demigod striving for god status, and he found a 'spider collar' meant to give giant spiders +2 armor, he tricked it into working for him with a use magic device check of 32, and became a 'Fang of L'olth'(Giant mutant spider/humanoid prestige class) and i used the power gained by my spider mutation to take on L'olth in a one-on-one wallcrawling battle, at the time I had four extra arms, and a feat so that I could use scimitars in each arm with no penalty... if I hit with all of them, I did 6D6 damage with a 15% chance to hit critical with each. I killed her while the world ended around both of us, ending the corruption of the bitch spider queen, L'olth, freeing the drow for about 30 seconds before the world ended. Yes, chaos in my opinion is nothing like evil. |

In practice, I think there is some overlap, although it's still fuzzy. True chaos is definitely not inherently malicious, so it is very difficult to label it as "evil"; chaos is simply amoral, not immoral. Still, I suppose I have to disagree with the dual axes of chaos-order and good-evil as far a philosophical model; in my mind, good and evil both thrive on order, and to separate either from order would imply a necessary lessening of conviction. Along these lines, a more accurate portrayal would be a triangle, with pure good, evil, and chaos as the three points.

That I would tend to agree with... the cliche of "evil destroys itself" is more that chaos will destroy itself. Measured evil, guarded evil, carefully tended evil will grow more strong over time.

ter in my opinion chaos is not evil.to me it is having a free will. you dont have to do what other people say. it doesn't mean it is evil. it is just doing what you want. i guess it could be evil. and ter what is it with you and the drow.
PS. im in his D&D group |
DO you consider choas evil? Or do you consider them two seperate ideals? There's an interesting book called "Principia Discordia" that has some positive words to say for chaos and order alike. It argues that the constructive form of each is good, and the destructive form is bad. Chaos can be quite useful if properly directed... for example, Paint Shop Pro has a "random noise" function that can add speckles to your picture. When you combine it with other features like Motion Blur or Contrast, it's great for creating all kinds of nice effects. (The stars on the BYONDscape banner were actually created with this method.) |

shut up Majar, you should really leave my love for the drow alone, and I could say the same, mister I-have-an-elven-god although, I think Drow are badass creature, in the darkness otherwise, without daylight adaptation, drow are pretty useless in the overworld, that is, unless they are bards...
besides, Majar, I hate drow women, they piss me off, and scare me a little, something about a white-haired, red-eyed, butch chick with a whip kind of scares the living crap out of me... I mean, a regular girl with a whip kind of scares me... There's a story behind that... Not a whip really, a Cat O' Ninetails... LOL!!!! 98.9 the rock's phonelines are down, Jim Bone, the DJ keeps calling in on the air and listening to the message! LOL!!! (for those of you who live in NorthEastern Kansas/NorthWestern Missouri) well, the story behind the whips: I used to work out at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, and I knew this girl, Samantha something, she bought this Cat O' Nine tails down at one of the shops, and was messing around with it, and ended up hitting me in the ass, it cut through my clothing, and made a good wound... Later! |

It's worth mentioning that the Principia Discordia is available online in several forms... I'd post links, but I'm lazy.

well depends what you mean by chaos...
if you mean chaos in the sense of like... rap then yes it is evil since if someone or something teachs chaos and someone ignorant comes along and sees it and thinks it's cool and thinks he could do better... And tortures people for it and such on an evil intent... chaos is not really stable in my opinion... It can lead to evil, or it could lead to good... Chaos could be just like another term for crazy, or it could be a term for many people doing evil things and it's a big mess and no one knows what's really going on... |
AD&D changed alignment to a matrix with a Good-Evil axis, and you start seeing chaotic good heroes (wild, free spirits with a deep appreciation for values like freedom and life) and lawful evil villains (manipulative Macchiavellian figures, those who live within the bounds of law but use the law to their own advantage.)
