Posted these in my game update, but I think it came out pretty damn good. Thanks to YutPut for some tips.
This is the process of getting from my original lava hex, to the final. Much better I think.

Edit: I think animating it with a glowing effect, as in, changing the dark orange to yellowish might be even better. Indeed. I was just thinking that. Good work, Flick. |
I tried a little of that, but it didn't really look good changing all of it at the same time, and it isn't really going to be used often enough for me to spend much more time making enough varieties of it to make it look good.

Using Kat's Particle Library you could probably sprinkle the map occasionally with small embers. It would be a great way I think to bring the map to life without spending ages doing animation.
