Im getting a cable modem and i want to host a web page myself, i know i cant just use any old name, but does anyone know how to make it so i can host my own site, as in run the files on my computer without uploading to the net? Is there a site that will let me do that? Just wondering.
If you need your own domain name, you have to register one. I personally recommend npsis.com as a satisfied customer (no other relation). Whatever you do, stay far away from VeriSign, Register.com, and their ilk. They charge far more money for far worse service.

To server web pages off of your own computer, you need a web server program. Apache is used by over 50% of all websites on the internet. It's free and is so good that Microsoft couldn't even flex its monopoly power to dominate this area. There is a Windows version, though I have no experience with that. Assuming you have Windows, you may have Microsoft Personal Web Server installed, which may be an easy way to go.

Just remember that running a web server opens you up to all sorts of potential security problems as script kiddies find your site and try to take it down.

http://www.godaddy.com is also a good, cheap, domain-buying site. (if ALL you want is a domain that is, if you want to buy webspace and stuff from 'em, it costs more).
$8 I think to buy a domain for a year...

you can also get a free subdomain if your IP address regualrly due to ISP refreshing of their dynamic IP lists. Try http://www.dns2go.com, or http://www.dyndns.com - both will require you to put a small program on your comp that keeps your IP address matched to a single webaddress - something like mysite.dyndns.com.

I understand that .tv domains are still free - imagine: www.dragonball.tv, or www.buffyfansite.tv... or www.transgender.tv...

Actually they've started charging for .tv domains, due to demand for them, I was going to try to get my hands on one but they were charging.

hell, from what i saw about 2 years ago when they first came out they were charging double for them. I dont mind have a subdomain. Thats not a problem for now. I know my system will not be very safe. Ill get ways to fix that. Probibly just secure one file for the site, and load some secure network software on it. Nomater, ill just be glad with all the size i want because i hate it when i am lemited and have a ton of adds.

{edit}Nevermind i think i got it.{edit}

i was looking at the Apache site and was confused on how to download it. It had like gzipped files? What are those? Self compiled? Are they trying to make it hard for me?

I assume you're running Windows, in which case you want http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/win32/
In response to Air Mapster
oh ok, that may help a little, i downloaded one, i guess it was not windows or something.
In response to Air Mapster
Ok i have it, now do you know any sub domains i can use this with(EX. mysite.theresite.com or www.theresite.com/mysite)?
In response to digitalmouse
both of those sites are pay sites. The whole reason i want to host off my computer is so i dont have to pay anything!
In response to Scoobert
um...they've changed recently...rats... but you can still search for 'free dynamic dns' and get a list of services...

I also mis-spoke - the correct free service is www.dyndns.org...not .com...
In response to digitalmouse
one of them sed as of october 1st they were pay, and the other i might have misread.

i was looking at this go daddy site, and how would i tell it my IP and it like be just like any site with, www.mysite.com/sub/index.html, im not sure which option that would be out of
1.I would like to forward this domain name to another web site for FREE!!*

2.I would like to forward AND mask this domain name to another one -- only $5.95.*

3.I would like to use another hosting provider. I would like to set up my DNS now. (You can set it up later if you wish.)

Any ideas?
