Haven't been able to muster development energy since tuesday night. Dragon Warrior is almost complete. Like, there are zero real challenges left, just a lot of porting information and NPC scripting.

Looking back on the last two weeks, I did about a month's work in 12 days. I think I was in a manic high when I wrote all that code, and am going into a depressive low. If I touch the codebase during a low state, I'll likely trash some things I'm not happy with and sit and tinker with stuff that's not a problem until I break the project or ruin my interest in it completely.

She's going on a shelf for a bit while I take a much deserved break.
Gear implemented, though the only finished piece is the Wizard Hat(+1 INT), damage numbers in, and what's any BYOND game without a bit of log barrel training?

what's any BYOND game without a bit of log barrel training?

Not instantly shit?

Heh!

In all seriousness though, if the "training" is more of a tutorial level form, that would probably be worth it. As long as it doesn't venture into the realm of pbags.
A good reason to have bag training in a game is to help players reach end game material much faster while at the same time not giving them free levels for nothing e.e. They gotta put their time into it, and while they put their time into it they are still on the game. I mean it doesnt take much brain power to mindlessly hit a log for countless hours (Actually ive been there and done that).

I mean think about it having to fight a bunch of enemies with little to no rewards aside from some exp not really all that inspiring.

On the other hand if you can get some exp just by hitting a static thing that never dies and you can even do it afk if you're legit enough to figure it out then that seems much more worthwhile.

Maybe some games end games is what defines their game aka pvp. Having log training can give people ways to customize their character the way they want without having levels. If your game is defined by pvp then you can easily see why one might want log training 8).

Though games that's pvp only usually have a limited life span without constant updates to fix/balance the pvp and add more stuff with the pvp.

That and lazyness of not wanting to make grinding fun.

wtf? you might as well just let them start with everything if ur gunna add a log that takes u to end game material

And a bad reason is that you're practically forcing the worst kind of grinding, which means that there is no good reason to have them in your game. If you think you "need" something like this, then you need to rework your game to get rid of it.

Wrong. That's not a good reason at all. And you don't have to put time into it if you setup a macro to do it for you. If there's going to be grinding, it should at least involve going about and seeking battles to fight, quests to complete, items to collect, etc. There has to be some kind of actual decision-based gameplay in order for there to be any point.

I mean think about it having to fight a bunch of enemies with little to no rewards aside from some exp not really all that inspiring.

When gameplay is reduced to grinding, that's a sign of bad game design. Better design would give the player incentive to seek out or avoid certain battles, mini-quests if you will, while on a regular basis, offering fresh challenges. Even something simple like a seek-N-items quest leading a player into dangerous but manageable territory would be better, as it then gives the player two goals: win battles if they must (or run away), but meanwhile look for the items they need.

On the other hand if you can get some exp just by hitting a static thing that never dies and you can even do it afk if you're legit enough to figure it out then that seems much more worthwhile.

No, it just means any tool with a macro can sit there on idle while he plays something else. That's nothing short of terrible design.

I don't think the people who add log training into the game is worried about good game design

You can stop reading here :P.

when it comes to stats. I mostly think log training are in pvp games, and pvp games on byond doesnt worry about anything else except for the pvp. :P

Though i have seen cases where log training are used by admins for testing stuff

or lazy mods who doenst feel like training
<3

The GMs didn't have an auto train verb to set their level and stats to 1.#INF? Laaammmmeeeeee
In response to Kumorii
Game owners(the ones i "know") doesnt trust their mods enough to add that.
Beginning to work on adding traps to the game.

If so, that's just crazy on their part. The thing to do in that situation is to have an admin verb that can grant as much XP as you need or want. They shouldn't have to put anything into a time sink.

Is anyone ever truly sane?

@brav01 Add mines, the classic boulder trap from Indiana john, Your venus fly traps except upside down in the dirt and closes it's mouth when you move on top of it, Liam Neeson.
