Which one should I get? I'm getting a job soon, so I am planning on saving 50 bucks a month so I can get one of these systems...which one should I get?

What I'm looking for is:

  • Good Graphics
  • Reliability
  • Online Capibility (or upcoming online capibility)
  • Good games
  • Nice controls
  • It won't be replaced by it's owner within the next 2 years. (As in, a PS3 comes out 1 year after I get a PS2 or something)

    Thanks for the help,
    -Sariat
I suggest getting a Gamecube, but that's because I'm a "Nintendo Fanboy" =P But if you don't particularily want a Gamecube, get a Playstation 2. In my opinion, X-Box is the worst system I've seen in years.

  • Good Graphics

    Best bet: X-Box
  • Reliability

  • Best bet: Gamecube
  • Online Capibility (or upcoming online capibility)

  • Best bet: Any
  • Good games

  • Best bet: Playstation 2
  • Nice controls

  • Best bet: Gamecube (Oo.... the feel of a Nintendo Wavebird)
  • It won't be replaced by it's owner within the next 2 years. (As in, a PS3 comes out 1 year after I get a PS2 or something)

  • I haven't heard anything about a Gamecube II or X-Box II, but I've heard of the PS3.... stupid Sony.. =P

Xbox only thing better is a mega sooped up pc, even then ...
  • Reliability
  • I have had my box for months and it has crashed once during jetset radio
  • Online Capibility (or upcoming online capibility)
  • The Box is getting it soon, if you have broadband you already can play it online, i have played Halo.
  • Good games
  • most class ps2 games are coming over to the box (MGSS, medal of honour frontline etc) there are ports from the old sega consoles (dreamcast (sega GT,Shenmue 2) , saturn (panzer dragoon)
i know that there are some dammn good GC games like uber smash bros which seems to be playable forever.
  • Nice controls
  • im a fan of all the pads for each console because you can sit and twiddle the pads whilst its loading (ps2 & GC spend ages loading compared to XBt personally i like the GC pad because it makes clicky noises when you twist the yellow analogue stick
  • It won't be replaced by it's owner within the next 2 years. (As in, a PS3 comes out 1 year after I get a PS2 or something)
  • As Dracon said, with a Xbox or GC you are not going to need to put up with its sequel after a year or so

Oh and what makes me like the Box most is that you can use your own cds i already have 30+ albums on it now, and i lend out the box and peeps put more on for me =D

I'm also a "nintendo fanboy". But the games for the GC seems...well, kiddy.

Unfortunately, that's the stereotype of Gamecube. But it is far from that.. Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Tuork.. all rated Mature. It just has less mature games than most systems.

'PS2 are churning out new and original games'
Hah! Only 'original' game I've seen released lately (depending on where your at) is Stuntman.

Sariat;
Good Games:
Sure, Xbox hasn't really got such a great variety now. But there's plenty of good games down-the-line;
Splinter Cell
Fable
Star-Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Blinx
Ninja Gaiden
Halo 2
Shenmue
series.. (well 2 and whatever they decide to make up to with the footage of Shenmue 1 in-case you missed out)
etc.

Online Capability:
Broadband only, (whereas I heard PS2 can be narrow-band or broadband), though I heard its coming round in America soon. (I'm pretty sure its in Beta testing right now).
Lots of games coming around for it too;
Various MMORPGs to come around, I.E. Star-Wars Galaxies, Phantasy Star Online (FFXI, hah!). Then tons of others quick-frill games, Halo 2, Project Gotham 2, Lambourghini, Madden.

Graphics:
No need to say, pretty much everyone else already has..

Being replaced in 2 years:
Well, this is the only place we can't be totally sure..but with the Xbox 2 said to be more likely around the next Footie World-Cup (or Soccer to you guys), and with Billy's Big Pockets, hopefully things will stay afloat.

Overall though...its down to you, consoles are like marmite; 'You either love it or you hate it'.
I'm happy with my Xbox, but I don't find PS2s to be that great. Yet my mate is the other way.

Well...the Playstation 2 has the best games on the market but Microsoft's XBOX is leading in every other category you mentioned. Not to mention its alot cheaper in the long run.

And if games is the real problem, think of it like this:
The Playstation 2 will have about 20 games that you really want out per month, and you will only have enough money to buy maybe 2 or 3. The XBOX on the other hand has about 5 must-have games out per month so you will basically be able to get all the games that you want.
Gamecube: Practically no loading time. Online by the end of october. cheapest system. gfx rival the xbox eventhough most wont admit it. Metroid Prime. 200$ package with mario sunshine and memory card 59. Squaresoft.

PS2: probably has a year 1/2 left of life. gfx arent as good as the other 2. wont be online until december because they stopped production of the network adaptors. gta: vice city. controller sucks for 1st person shooters.

Xbox: becoming the next dreamcast. too expensive. 200$ controller for their new game coming out. Halo 2. not enough good games coming out. the 200$ package with controller s jsrf and sega gt.

kiddy just because of the look? hah i laugh people are too full of themselves to give it a chance...seems like anything without blood in it and a colorful world gets branded a kiddy game. besided GC is aiming for the mature audience in november with mtroid prime and other holiday games coming out too.
XBox and PS2 don't impress me at all.. go with Gamecube ^_^
Games: My PS2 has never crashed and ive had it for just over a year maybe im lucky but ive never seen any of my friends crash.

Console games tend to crash less often becuase they are tested better since on most consoles you can't patch the games. I don't know about the XBox but I've heard you install the games which would allow for patched which it's good becuase it supports lazy devolpers that get into the thinking "Well we need to release it now so we'll just release the fix to this bug after it's out". Anyway I have seen the PS2 games crash you just have to go out of your way to get them to(usually). In GTA 3 you can ramp your boat over this on region and be on some inner body of water if you travel around on it to a certain spot the game locks up. Also in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 if you make a map where you start faceing a quarter pipe then behind the quater pipe fill the map with as many of the T section grining rail. If you play this map with 2 people and hit the quater pipe such that both people turn to see all the pipes simultaniously the game locks up. I'm sure there are many many scenarios in which you can cause any game lock up you just have to look for places that push past the systems capabilities or areas the programmers didn't plan on you being able to get to.

Well I went with the game cube and your list of reasons it's good is fairly accurate, but Squaresoft is more of a detriment than anything. Squaresoft just spams the market with shitty things which shouldn't be even called games much less RPGs since they provide next to no gameplay.

You named one "non-kiddy" game for GC. I'd have to think a bit to think of a "kiddy" game for Xbox or ps2. Look at Nintendo's characters, no wonder why people call them kiddy. Are the games good? Yea. Would I spend the money on a GC? Nah.

So you like the games for the Game Cube but becuase of they way the characters are drawn you won't play them? Would you buy a Game Cube if they just redrew all the characters and made them all scatily clad women?

You bet I would :P But seriously, Nintendo games were cool when i was 8. But I'm not into Pokemon, I never liked StarFox, and they killed Link (via cel shading). The pics for the new Zelda game rocked, then, they changed the graphics. Ok, I don't judge games on graphics alone, but what else can I judge an un-released game by? It's not just the graphics, its the idea of the game, the purpose of the game. I've played Mario and Zelda and StarFox and Donkey Kong and Metroid games before. Nintendo keeps re-doing the same ol'. They target a younger audience, so I stopped favoring them. Would I pay over $100 for a GC, nope. But when it drops below $100, then it's mine. Yea, I'm cheap.

Well Nintendo doesn't target younger audiances they are going for games that anyone can play and have fun with. The larger your demographic the more money you can make. Despite thier cartoonish appearance most of thier games are fun(Pokemon is an exception though yeach!). The new Starfox game was bad but that's because it wasn't originally a Starfox game they just replaced the main character with Star Fox and called it a Star Fox game. The cel shading thing is being used a lot in all the consoles even for games that aren't intended for children. Mark of the Kri 2 for PS2 looked very violent despite looking like a cartoon. I don't think the new link game will be violent but the graphical appearance shouldn't make the game any less entertaining. Nintendo does use thier same old mascots but Nintendo manages to remain very innovative such that the games are nostalgic but don't feel completly like thier predecesors. This is something most other companies can't boast.
Damnit! You all keep confusing me. I played XBox at KB Toys and played Madden 2003. It was kick ass. Matrix-like replays, rumbles in the controler, easy to use controler (Unlike PS). AND IT LOOKED REAL!!!

I went to my friends house, played ESPN's NFL Game or whatever, and it was ghetto. Cheap ass graphics, ghetto controls, sucked.

I still havn't tried the Gamecube.

I was going with PS2 at first, then XBox, and now I'm just confusing (leaning with Gamecube). Sheesh!

Bah forget all them buy a used N64 :). No other system can compete with it's durability. My roommate dropped an N64 off a 3 story building onto concrete. There was a large scratch in the system but it still ran. Someone from school had a copy of Mario Tennis go through a washer and it still ran! If you want the system that will survive the apocalypse and out live you go with the N64!

I already have an N64, but the games suck. I only have two....

WWF:Attitude (Worst game ever, it was an impulse buy)

and

Madden 2001 - Kicks ass, kind of out of date, but still kicks ass.

But look at the bright side if the world ends and you manage to survive you'll still have an N64 and 2 games to play :).
