Yes, I know I complain about it constantly... it's one of my.. erm... pet peeves. I'm talking about when people use poor grammar, spelling, or punctuation.
I'm basically asking two questions:
1)Why must people use words such as " u, ur, plz, thx", mispunctuate such as I went to my doctor today 'by the way, he's cool', and misspelling such as hye wazup can i be a gm plz?. Are people just too lazy to type out the real words?
2)Why do I care so much?
I don't mind the occasional lol, and I certainly do not mind :-), =), :)

Are people just too lazy to type out the real words? I think about these two things now and then. I bet people who show poor English skills fall into one of several categories: (1) English is not their first language (though this would mostly be people with poor grammar, rather than chatroom-speakers) (2) Those with a learning disability, or people who just never had a good head for language (who may or may not use chatroom speak) (3) Those who are perfectly capable of using proper English, but don't care to because they (a) dislike typing, (b) think chatroom-speak is cool, or (c) both. Group (3) can probably be divided into (3a) Those who would change if they really understood how users of proper English regarded them (dumb, lazy, irritating, and all in all, not particularly cool) (3b) Those who don't care. As for why some of us are bothered so much by others' typing habits... that may be a more interesting question. I think all of these elements may be present in each of us to varying degree: (1) Improper English, despite often using shorter to words, is more difficult to read. The flow our eyes expect is interrupted by the use of improper constructs. (2) We take the trouble to use proper English, and it rubs us the wrong way to see someone else not bother with something we ourselves take care to do. (3) We haven't had good experiences with the "type" of person who says "plz" and "ur." We may have a stereotype in our heads about how smart or how mature someone who uses chatroom speak is, and we have had many experiences to reinforce the stereotype. We don't want to be reminded of the behavior we've had to deal with from many people who talk this way. (4) We may have a genuine interest in the chatroom-speaker's being part of the community, and would like to see them communicate in a way that would help them get along. (5) We know how to use words right, and we're proud of ourselves, dammit, and we'll take any chance we can to display our skills by correcting people. I used to correct people a lot more than I do now. At this point I only make corrections if something is just driving me insane (like 15 different people in one thread saying "diety" instead of "deity"). But I may offer suggestions like "Your last post was hard to read because there were no paragraph breaks... just hit return once in a while, it doesn't really matter where, and more people will read it." I've sadly fallen under the same habit... it seem I have a lower respect for people who use proper grammar.

Some people use Ur,U,and short stuff like that to make it seem like there typing fast. If you're playing a RTS game multiplayer I can see the need to convey a message as fast as possible but you shouldn't need blazing typing speed when posting on forums. |

No, RTS doesn't matter. If you're playing a FPS it does make sense to use abbreviations, though.

You can thank TechTV too, thats were i got that address.

But what if the real reason is they can't type fast, or they just don't know how to spell the words the correct way.
