I am in need of some assistance...
I have just got phpBB2 and I have it uploaded onto my WebSpace. I just tried to install it now and it asked me these questions on DataBases.
It also quoted that I should have a DataBase setup somewhere and the fact is, I don't have a DataBase nor do I know how to use them.
So anyone with the knowledge of these things could you possibly help me please?
Digitalmouse and Nadrew are the only ones I know of so far but if anyone else can help me, all the help will be appreciated.

Mel: Is the phpBB forum to be installed at home, or on the same site as your 'br0ken' domain?
Depending on where the forum will reside determines how I can instruct you further. If it is on a local or remote machine, this process is about the same - one difference being the information needed to get phpBB to connect to MySQL. If locally, you must provide the info yourself, if your website provider uses MySQL, some of the info must come from them. |

I have also been told the Databases get large so it might be best to have it from my PC. But, if I did it from my PC would people still be able to get to my Database even though I am offline so that people can login or would they not be able to get on? If they cannot get on then I might have to use 'br0ken's MySQL information if not get someone else to hold my database for me :S --Lee |

It would be better to have the forum database on the same machine as the website, unless you can keep your home computer connected and running 24/7. I also hear that Nadrew or Foomer was offering forum hosting space - using phpBB2 as well... if so, then you could just have a link from your site to the other's forum hosting - customized for your site of course.
If you can get about 2-5 MB for database space - you should be ok for a while on your own site running phpBB underneath it. Hedgerow Hall has grown to about 2,628 posts equaling 4.96 MB - and this is since it began in late June of this year! If you expect that amount of growth - try for another hosting. (As an aside - one of the services that digitalBYOND will be offering is forum hosting, once the game server testing is complete. If you can wait a few weeks, I can offer you a reasonable hosting scam-..err, I mean deal! yea, that's it - I meant deal...) |

Cool. Well when I get the money I would love for you to host my forum, but for now I guess I will have to use Br0kens. If I can't manage that I guess I will have to find someone who will do it for free for the moment :-\ --Lee |

I think that I don't have the MySQL Database with br0ken.org anymore because when I tried to install the phpBB onto my site it said it couldn't get into/reach my database or something :S
So, would anyone be able to host a database for me for free for a little bit please? I know this is asking alot, but I really need a forum up and running. --Lee |

...but for now I guess I will have to use Br0kens... Ok. Then you need a couple of things: name of the database they gave you access to; the username and password; and the address of the Muscle server (often just 'local' is enough for that). This info you put into the installation script that you crank up after putting all the files on the website (say, under the directory called 'forum'). So, for example, you uploaded the phpBB2forum code under the http://leewhittaker.br0ken.org/forum/ directory. Go to your web-browser and type in http://leewhittaker.br0ken.org/forum/install.php, and follow the prompts. You should be able to follow the guide found at http://www.phpbb.com/guide/phpBB_Users_Guide.html#section2_3 Don't forget to delete the install.php file when the board is up and running! If you still have trouble, let us know! |

Two choices I see: 1) get your webhost to give you a database; 2) contact Nadrew and see if he has space for you on his service...

I cannot get a database setup because they have stopped the service for now. Option two is also down because Nadrew is no where to be seen :S [Edit]: Nadrew can't let me use any of his. --Lee |
