What about a lowsy $30 dollars for a 4 year old game, which comes with 4 free games as a bonus? Of course once you by the main game these other games can be downloaded for free, and there is no other package type for a cheaper price. Or 40 bucks for a 5 year old game =P.(Yes, these are real games I'm talking about, I just feel like protecting their names, like it matters....)

It's possible that the bootleg copy of Starcraft: Broad War was corrupted. Here's a tip: either get a CD burner and a friend to lend you a copy of the NON-BOOTLEG version, plus a few blank CD-Rs, and burn, or just buy the legal copy.

You best bet in uunderstanding in going to places like linuxnewbie.org (or .com? - I forget) and really getting your hand dirty. I spent nearly a week doing reading and note taking on the best Linux for PowerMac computers. Finally settled on YellowDogLinux and now I'm the proud owner of a 280Mhz G3 Linux computer than runs MacOS9.1 on top of it!
Try these links for embarking on the quest of enlightenment:

http://www.linuxbeginner.org/ (which has the same layout as my own site...grrr)

and http://www.cafecomputer.com/faqindex.htm
Enjoy, and good luck!
Oh, and check out http://www.willows.com/ for the latest info on the Willows TWIN libraries. Not for the faint at heart, but worth a try.
You can also try http://www.winehq.com/ for the latest (October 2002) build of WINE. From a quick glance at the 'about' page, there is partial support for DirectX - Direct3D is missing...
