First of all, I was unsure of where to post this so I put it here.
If a game is based on another game that is shares its name (and concept) with a movie that is very similiar to another movie that stars the director of the first movie (he also starred in it and wrote it), is the first game a rip or a fan game? What if the only things in common between the two games are thier name and very-general game idea, is it a rip. I don't intend to respond to any replies; I want to know what people think, I don't want a debate.

I'm not sure, but I believe a "rip" refers to a game that's based on someone else's code. A fan game is just a game based on a copyrighted theme.

ripped is generally assosiated with stealing.
Ripped graphic etc etc Whilst a Fan Game could be considered a tribute game to something. My 2 pence :P |
I think that the differnce between the two depends on where you used it, and the context they are used in.
Although a Fan game is generally something that acknowlages the fact that they are making a version of something else. Where as a rip takes something, and claims it to be its own. -DogMan |
Well if this has something to do with that bodacious Metroid game you made, then thats a well fangame and 50% rip. A rip I believe is a game composed of copyrighted material from another game, and is usually poorly coded. The reason yours is a fangame/rip 50% is because you use graphics from a Metroid game, but you did a great job at making it!
