The company that has to run, maintain, and update the servers you play on doesn't pay a one time fee and then get to use them forever so why should you be able to? To make sure to cover their costs, they would have to price those games at closer to $150 - $200 if they had unlimited online play time. So, would you rather pay that no matter how long you play, or stop paying once you stop playing?

I am not seeing how money will help improve a game on BYOND aside from the purchase of a hosting machine. I repeat: "Also, there's a limit to how much you can be committed to a vision if that vision is unfunded. Most people work at least 8 hours a day for at least five days a week. This doesn't leave much time for game development, and it also has a serious impact on what I'll term 'mental resources.' Funding makes it easier to give game design, hosting, and maintenance the attention it deserves." A "professional" game is "professional" quality because someone was able to devote the equivalent of several months of work days to it. This doesn't happen without money, because people need to eat and they need at least minimum clothes and shelter. Sure, you can grab an hour here and an hour there, but that makes development rushed and haphazard... six one hour blocks is not a substitute for having even one three hour block of uninterrupted work. |
I would say theres plenty of others, just not enough kindness in them. There are too many others taking advantage of what kindness there is to be had. I am not seeing how money will help improve a game on BYOND aside from the purchase of a hosting machine.
