I just recently got Civilization 3: Play the World and I was wondering if anyone else would like to try and set up a multiplayer game sometime :)?

I also have Civilization 2:Test of Time, Civilization 2:Multiplayer Gold Edition, and Call to Power 2 if anyone would like to set up a game of one of those.

I've been having bad luck with the online play, but would be willing to play a PBEM game if anyone was up to it.

I'd figure that PBEM would feel kinda slow since there are a lot of turns in which not much is done, but it could be fun anyway. But as far as sending email is concerned my regular email client for some reason can recieve mail but has problems sending it. So I've been using yahoo to send email which is kind of a pain. ICQ would be another good way to send savefiles if you have it.

So I was thinking it would be kinda cool to set up some BYOND program using hubfiles to pass around turns :).

Anyway would be nice to get a few more people, maybe Deadron since he seems to like the Civ games.

Unfortunately PBEM is pretty much unplayable. Pisses me off...all the effort into real-time gameplay, when PBEM would easily be the most popular if it was done right.

Oh well, SOME DAY the DDT will get our version of this type of game out, with PBEM done right.

The PBEM just takes a lot of unnecessary hassle. The real-time play, in my experience, has been unplayable, in the sense that it just doesn't run. I still haven't done much experimenting with the latest patch, but I'm just going to hold out until the next one after.

I'd say it's worse than that. You can't see moves that were made by the other person. If they kill a unit or take a city, you never see that -- you just see what things are like when it reaches your turn. If a unit moves into sight and then out of sight, you never see it. Etc.

That pretty much renders a PBEM game useless, in my opinion.

It worked for me.

Hrm! I hadn't quite thought about the implications of that. Still, I don't quite see it as a hopeless cause... it would be nice if such "features" were options independent of whether or not you're playing PBEM, but still I think they could make for an interesting game, albeit not quite the exact game that was intended. The only problem is that high movement becomes ever so much important, and I think in general the fast attack unit chain is already overpowered, especially towards the later stages of the game.
I thought Civ3 was a pain in the ass... it was reallllly fun but like you had to wait FOREVER for the little workers to move around and I could never figureo ut a way to just turn show workers off...

There is an option to turn off animation for automated and manually moved units. Just turn the automatic one off and it goes much faster.

There are a large number of options for turning things off. I only show my own unit movement, and things go pretty fast (I have a new machine though).

If you don't turn off most of the unit viewing options, the game will definitely run slow.
