I agree, much easier to just type the name I want in, then go through all that, and if theres a lot of lag its even worse.

Because its flashy. Because no one on Byond has done it before. It looks good, it doesn't lag, and it gives the game a console sort of feel. And if you think its so easy, lets see you do it. I haven't even bothered to try yet, cause I'm not exactly all that great with HUDs (I can throw a menu or a status bar on there easily but not much more than that)

I see no point in that kind of name selection, that's why I haven't made one. I find better uses for screen objects, like this or this.

The sad part is that most of the posts are just one liners, so it's a huge topic with little content.

That's not a bad idea for forum organization though.
