Heh, I stocked up on $50 worth of Coca Cola and junk food today at a local grocery store (Food Town, in case anyone has one nearby) and only had to pay $15 of my own money...
All because I did some commission work for them...and got $35 in gift cards for the job...
What did I do? Paint a picture on their front window...lol
Actually, two pictures... The first was before Christmas, when I painted a Santa Claus... This one is for Valentine's Day, and I painted a cupid...
My girlfriend works in the store, and when they received the word from above that they needed to have their windows decorated for major holidays, she mentioned that I had some artistic ability... So, I was asked to paint their windows...
I've got a feeling that it's going to happen more in the future as well... I get the impression that they like my work...lol
And it works out nicely for me... Since I'm recently unemployed (as mentioned in a previous thread) my Coke and junk food budget is rather slim... So painting a picture or two on a store window is a small price to pay to support my "habit"...lol
My life is good, even in the "bad" times...lol

I drank a two-liter of coke today.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to take any pictures in time for the Santa Claus, and I never got around to taking one of the Cupid before Valentine's Day came by and it was washed off... However, I did one a few days ago for Easter, and we took a polaroid today (which is why I'm dredging up this relatively old topic...lol):
Please excuse the bad scan of a bad polaroid that was made worse by decreasing the color depth to reduce file size...but I managed to retain a pretty decent approximity to the actual colors used (mostly pastel, so no, they're not washed out...) The window is about 6' x 8', to give a bit of scale... And yes, it says "Hoppy Easter!"...lol I had originally drawn Happy Easter!, and made an offhand comment to my girlfriend that I should change it to Hoppy... She ended up talking me into it...lol The butterflies are her contribution as well...lol In the bunny's basket, there are three yellow bunny Peeps that you probably can't quite discern from a splotch of yellow paint...but in person, they're recognizeable, and even have black spots for eyes (I just had to draw Peeps...lol) Also in the basket is a chocolate bunny, and a couple of eggs (more eggs laying about on the grass... along with some tulips and daisies) The picture extends to two more windows to the right (set back behind the doors, which can be seen coming off perpendicular to this window along the right edge) but those windows just carry on the grass with a few more eggs and flowers (and a bumblebee)... But I didn't think they were worth wasting polaroid film on...lol The procedure I use for doing this is to first draw the picture on the outside of the window with a dry erase marker... And then, paint from the inside (for the first two, we left the marker lines on the window, but for this one, we wiped most of them off, except for necessary ones like the outlines of the bunny's fase, and the Peeps and chocolate bunny in the basket) The first two paintings we did when they were open, and had to contend with customers coming in through the doors... It was an inconvenience to everyone involved, so we decided to do this one after hours... It took about 4 hours of total work, actually... Of course, that's working casually, and includes a bit of a break to have a Coke, and clean up time afterwards... We started about 11 PM and didn't get done until 3 in the morning...lol But I think it's really fun work... And I was paid in $20 in gift cards for this one... Not bad for doing something I'd consider a hobby otherwise...lol So now I'm well stocked up on groceries that I only paid for by having fun painting grafiti on a store window...lol (well, I still live at home, so the only "groceries" I buy are mostly junk food and Coca Cola...lol and $20 goes a long way in that respect...) |
Pretty nice, I've done those types of things for local stores, too. It's pretty much the only type of art I'm good at.

So far, they're still staying open... But for a while, no one really knew...lol
But who knows how much longer it's going to be, though... It's really all Spartan's fault... (Spartan is the company that bought them and is now losing money and closing them, for those that might not know) Right after they took over, you'd go into the store, and find nothing but Spartan Brand everything... Generic, generic, generic... It was so bad that in some cases, they didn't even have the name brand products, only Spartan (and "Home Harvest"...some other generic brand)... And in some cases, the generic Spartan stuff was more expensive than the name brand stuff... So, no wonder they started losing money... I know that I personally usually only buy name brand products, even if the generic stuff is just as good... I dunno, it just seems better... So, name brand is pretty much all I buy... And when a store takes away many of its name brand products, and replaces them with their own, generic, in-house stuff...fewer people (like myself) are going to want to shop there... They're the only ones to blame for dropping Food Town down the tubes...lol But, as of this moment, our Food Town is still open... But I think it's only a matter of time... I'm pretty sure their Union contracts are up at the end of this month, so maybe they'll wait until then... |
