If you had to pay money to download DS,DM,and DD.Would you?

Depends on the price. :P
Yup, I would. There have been discussions about having things like "DS Lite" free, and full versions pay to use, but it was promptly shot down by Dantom on the basis: "BYOND will always be free!".

I have a 2 way answer for this one.
1. If Byond were to go pay 2 play right now, I probably would try to find a way to buy it.
2. If it had been pay 2 play when I stumbled on it, nearly 4 years ago, or had I just now found out about Byond, I'd just click the little X on my IE browser =P
Hehe well, if it was getting a new account the honest way, yes. But if you mean game wise, no.

Hey if it had had a price i would also just go back to mud connector where i found sariat's superhero bash. If Dantom made so you had to pay BYOND would have very few members

And if they didn't, we would have no BYOND.
I dont think I would, unless it was upgraded and was able to compile and run 3d games using a different mapping module which I could explain to Dantom fully if they had the time.

Perhaps a little trick to have BYOND for PS2 (network adapter) im certain many more people would open their eyes to byond and take it a bit more seriously, that and Dantom would be getting an actual income for it.

[edited by Spuzzum: Please don't insult people (especially specific people) on the forums. How the heck did you manage to turn a thread about paying for BYOND into an insult to people anyway? =\ ]
I would not pay. Why? I don't think it's worth it. Sure, it's a great program and community, but the whole idea of paying for sub-standard games is what bothers me. Sure, most of the junky games would disappear with the pay-to-play plan, but there would be less people in the community and even less programming games.

In my eyes, the whole pay-to-play plan will eventually bring down BYOND. Why?

- There will be less people in the community, meaning,
- there will be less games being made, which means that,
- less people will be joining BYOND each day, until there are none,
- until people start leaving and the community is too small to continue.

All this just so Dan and Tom can make a few bucks.
I think BYOND would to have to raise it's speed and graphical abilities before they could consider charging for it.

Nah, I don't think that'll be a problem. There are plenty of people who pay monthly fees to play text-only games. Granted, we'll miss out on a lot of the folks who only focus on the newest first-person shooters and all that -- but then, that isn't BYOND's intended audience. BYOND is the thinking man's (or woman's) gaming system! :)

Even if BYOND did officially support 3D games I don't think many people here that want to make a 3D game could make a 3D game. Most people here don't seem to understand exactly what that would imply. Making a 3D game is a mathmatical and logical nightmare and even if BYOND did support 3D games I probably wouldn't even want to bother. The nice thing about BYOND is the fact that I can program for half an hour to an hour and have a good playable prototype of a game. The same couldn't really be achieved for a 3D game without sacrificing vast amounts of flexibility.
no cuz i got no money and my parents probly wont pay :(
Right now, yes.

If BYOND hadn't been free when I discovered it, probably not. If there was a trial version, I'd probably play around with it a bit. If the fee was fairly cheap, then yes I probably would end up paying for it - but if it was outside my (very small) budget, I wouldn't.

I still favour the charge-developers-a-percentage model; a percentage of all game subscription fees would go to Dantom, instead of the developer. Players win, because they don't have to pay anyone anything if they don't want to. Dantom wins because they're making money. Developers win because: (a) They're making money too, and (b) What benefits Dantom benefits BYOND which benefits them. :-)

Mertek, please think before you post. DM is hardly sub-standard, and the people that would be gone when there are fewer people in the BYOND community would be the kinds of people making DBZ games. If it went to pay, developers would have a greater urge to make games that are WORTH playing. Also, it's not so that Dan and Tom can make a few bucks, it's so that BYOND can keep on running. The bandwidth that people like you soak up isn't free, you know.

I would definatly pay for BYOND, for one, it's getting better all the time. For two, even if there were less of a community it would flush out all DBZers and all the bad part of the community and we'd just have a better community.
I wouldn't pay but it would be ok if Dan and Tom start charging more out of withdrawls like 40% and ask for 10 dimes after the 5th hub entery
When this kind of question is raised, the temptation to respond, "What kind of moron would pay for BYOND?" may be almost overpowering, until you consider the response to THAT question... the two people who have been paying for BYOND since the beginning, and continue to pay for it in so many ways.

Thank you, Dan and Tom.
Despite BYOND's lack of flexibility towards complete 3D games, I would say I would most definately pay for it.

I wouldn't only buy it to program, but also to be part of the community, which I think is great, by the way.

BYOND is a great, and for the most part, flexible programming language. You have your simple overhead games, then there is platform games, and I've even seen a first person maze (Amazing job, OneFishDown). So no matter what your desires are, you can most likely come to BYOND to find them.

Just my thoughts.

I might pay for Dream Maker, but not Dream Seeker. I feal that Dream Seeker should be free, that would keep BYOND afloat. Also it would have to be rather cheep for DM. Now i don't like the idea of BYOND having a price at all, but i would understand if it was needed. I would pay very little for DM a month, maybie 1 buck a month or something really cheap like that, or maybie a flat price of 50 bucks if needed. I would NOT like to have to pay for any part of BYOND. I feal it should be free and should stay free, maybie more people need to send in dimes so DanTom can make intrest or maybie stock value or whatever they do with the money. I doubt they just stuff it in there beds.
Yes.
