Flames are kept down, so I don't think they're as big a (current) problem as the searches imply. As for cussing, now and then I do searches and either edit or kill any new posts I see that use them. Older posts are generally left alone since for the most part they precede the moderator system.

Yeah, moderation isn't perfect. I know that I've let a few "s**t"'s slide when I should have probably edited them. Just remember that BYOND forum moderation is an all-volunteer effort, handled by people who have jobs and lives and BYOND projects, and who don't have time to read every single post. (I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the volume of BYOND posts has increased to the point where no one reads every single post!)
So I'd say your observations are probably quite accurate, but the fact that many posts "slip through the cracks" doesn't mean that moderation is ineffective. And remember, when a really, really nasty post appears, someone will almost certainly point it out specifically to the moderators, who will deal with it. None of us think we can keep the forums perfectly squeaky-clean, but on the other hand, none of us want BYOND to get a reputation as a "wretched hive of scum and villainy" like Mos Eisley Spaceport. As for smileys, I'm torn on the subject. I use them fairly often, because I tend to make remarks that would seem nasty and harsh if I didn't have some way of making it clear that I was being facetious. I'll grant that the smiley is kind of a bastardization of the English language, but in the absence of the vocal tones and facial expressions that accompany face-to-face conversation, it's a useful bastardization. | |
