Yeah the BitBlt has gotta go :p I don't understand why they didn't just use DirectX or OpenGL to begin with...

context...yeah...a text mud can be fun to you...so i dont if you don't care, then why did you post here, knowing full well that people are gonna comment on it? sheesh! BYOND's only limitation is the limits set forth by the developers of games, which are constantly being pushed, warped, and broken as creativity and talent expands. If you can't see that, then you are in the wrong place. Also, it is unlikely that BYOND will convert to a 3D ego shooter engine just to satisfy your needs. There are several very well know free 3D games engines out there.. BYOND is not going for that market. |
I definitely agree with that. At first I thought it was pretty great that DWO was running smoothly as an online nintendo game. But then we started working on our FF game, and then when FF-Legacy was released, it extended the boundries we THOUGHT we had confirmed.

he just said it?... read the whole thing...not just the end...and i don't see why you keep arguing with me...theres no point. my views wont change.

I believe you have to pay for OpenGL and DirectX, and BYOND was made before OpenGL and DirectX came out(I think?).

context...yeah...a text mud can be fun to you...so i dont care what you consider quality... I didn't specifically mean text games. The fact that you believe all games except text games require state of the art graphics just goes to show your ignorance to the gaming world. Take a look at the series of Metal Gear games(From Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid, all the way from NES), or FF1-FF6, or Everquest(with a user base of over 100,000 people online at once. It was around 80,000 online at peak hours before they added in an improved graphics engine. It was about 4 years behind around then, and was about the worst loooking pay-to-play 3d online rpg in existance), or if you want to look at FPS games: Unreal Tournament There are more people playing Unreal Tournament than there are Quake 3/Arena, and more than Unreal Tournament 2003. Why? The game is amazingly fun. The graphics are centuries worse than either of those two games(Quake Arena, Unreal Tournament 2003), yet people still play it. And on the other end, good graphics dont assure good games. Unreal Tournament 2003 has some of the better FPS graphics(Atleast when it came out), and it bombed completely. Im a large UT fan, and almost no one I know who plays UT has even bought 2003. In fact, I have to turn the quality of the game down to the lowest possible setting with my GeForce4, or the game will freeze because its trying to display so high quality images at a speed beyond the capability of this state of the art graphics card. |
(Two plugs in one day!)Well, you could go with Unreal Tournament, but then again there is Half-Life. Why do people like Half-Life? Well, because it does not use state of the art equipment to run, and has spawn offs of the engine which only require downloading. So when you get bored with one thing, you can go to another without wasting a buck! Most of the modifications you never even leave, look at Counter-Strike(Sure not the best playerbase, but a good game indeed.), it has somewhat around 1,600,000 players simultaneously playing.
Then with other modifications, such as Natural Selection, the Half-Life WonAuth servers have been able to estimate a playerbase for the engine, it totals at about the size of 3,000,000 players. This goes to show that good graphics are definately not everything, heck you can still see the pixels on the skins from a mile away. <<>>Kusanagi<<>> |
I don't see how this gfx thing got started anyways I never came out and said "I hate this because of gfx" im talking about capability...which so far SO FAR is only people making 8 directional shooting games and laggyeth movement. I know alot of people who bought 2k3...some didn't because of early problems, stuff they took out or uncapable computers. Point being if BYOND is better than every other game making utility that comes out why have most people not heard of it or use rpg maker?

Point being if BYOND is better than every other game making utility that comes out why have most people not heard of it or use rpg maker? BYOND is a programming language. Though it is well structured you still have to do a lot of work to get even simple games to a prototype stage. RPG Maker is just drawing a map and editing the data for monsters, characters, ect. There is a simple point and click language but it's only meant for doing scripted dialog and a small number of other things that console RPGs tend to do. A lot of people use it because that is the exact thing a lot of people want to do with minimal amount of work. BYOND is much better because it's much more powerful and flexible. It can be used to make any number of tile based and text based games as well as some networking applications. The main point is BYOND is a programming language meant to be used to make a large variety of things. RPG Maker is just that a program to make cookie cutter RPGs. |
I should probably advise you that WildTangent is under a bit of scrutiny for questionable advertising and commercial practices -- namely, plugins that collect data from your computer without your permission.
I tested the theory, and when I installed one of the programs (a WinAmp plugin), there was no option (or even any mention) of any sort of software that transmitted any data. Then I dug through the new folder it created, and found a letter from the CEO of WildTangent regarding how they had been falsely accused of installing spyware, and provided instructions on how to disable the update program (as he called it). I followed the instructions to the letter. Five minutes later, my firewall went off with a program alert. Well, as the Queen would say, "We were not amused." (In actuality, the words I said aloud were considerably less appropriate.) I not only ran the uninstall program, but also manually went through my registry and cleaned out two entries that the uninstaller didn't remove. |
Wow, i didnt know that, thanks for telling me, i also hate how they want you to buy everything in the world on there site, why dont they just make you have to buy the rights to go on there darn site. Anyways, the 3D software is really good for a novic like me, i can safly say "I suck at making anything 3D" but i can also say "I have made some kool stuff with wildtangent".

Then you have not really looked about then - there are several examples of pixel based movement which break away from the traditional 8-direction system. It all lies in the skill and imagination of the programmer. Regarding laggy movement - that largely depends on host speed, connection speed, and proper code design. Again, the later relys on the skill of the programmer. |
That's not true, Square & Enix are both well known for useing the leading edge of graphics. People bought the games becaue they where both fun and graphicy advancd for there time.
