I don't think I realized just how efficient the dreammaker system really is. After seeing RPGmaker 95 and 2000, and another game maker called "Toolkit", I have to say that the byond dreammaker not only surpasses all of those by a wide margin just in its design, but the fact that it allows people to put their games right on line makes it all the better. Does the byond dreammaker out-do ALL other RPGmaker engines? There must be some out there that are excellent that I haven't heard about. What are people's comments on this?

There is the Reality Factory FPS engine, but it's an FPS engine and not an RPG system. It's free. Just look for it on yahoo and it'll come right up.

Im pretty sure some game company is making a PS2 CD that works with the Harddrive add-on (soon to come out) to allow people to create games of many different types and host them. even sell them for a small price.\
Side scroller, action, sport, rpg i believe the formats are almost only limited to player imagination. Still, it wont be cheap and I think there is a subscription charge with it. I look into it more since its only a rumor |
BYOND is by far the best I've found. The simplicity and versatility of the DM language make it a pleasure to program in (and I program for a living, so I have at least some basis for comparison). I could go on and on, but I've done that many times before, so I'll just stop here. :)

what programs/games have you helped make? any i know? Mr. Moneybags/Peanutmuncher (i say this because professional coders can be payed either peanuts or LOTSA money, depends on you gullability.

Well, if you like 3D, i suggest checking out [edit]http://www.wildtangent.com[/edit] they have a nice free 3D game maker, from the models to the programming.
[edit] I forgot the n before the t. |
It's for, at best, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis kind of graphics, and that's not too bad. I don't know any companies or groupings of people that make online games with old-style graphics and game-play.

(which both certainly are) please try coming to the argument a bit more prepared next time, eh? then you won't look silly in front of others... =) |
As the replies below tell you, the quality that can come out of DM/BYOND in general is only limited to the skill/ingenuity of the programmer...
Good AI can be programmed in BYOND... Great AI can be programmed in BYOND... With or without the convenince of the built-in procs... A gun fired in a BYOND game could be fired in an INFINITE number of directions... Because under the surface, all programs run on numbers... And numbers are an infinite resource... You've just got to program it to use virtual space instead of the tile based graphical system... (I.E. keep track of player locations and bullet locations by using mathematical formulas instead of their X's and Y's...) Anything you can do with a bit of math (and that's anything, basically) can be done with BYOND... And any shortcomings in the graphics area can be overcome with the proper use of things like pixel movement, multiple tiling, etc... As for the "low quality" of graphics seen in BYOND games, that's only because no one has yet put forth the effort to creating graphics of a higher caliber (well, there are a few shining examples, like Triste's "3D" ship demo)... After all, graphics are just pictures, plain and simple... Anything that can be drawn can be drawn in BYOND... It just takes a lot of skill and time... In fact, ANYTHING that can be done in any other game can be done with BYOND (including fancy particle and lighting effects)... Of course, most things like that can't be done in a playable state, though, because they'd take too much processing power to execute...lol However, it's still possible to create a DM program that would do those things... |

then why hasn't anything of quality came out? That depends what is considered quality to you. I consider Living & Dead high quality, as I do BirdLand, Hedgerow Hall, Lode Wars, Tanks, and other games. If your looking for some amazingly well rendered 3d FPS/MMORPG, this obviously is not the place to look. Quality exists not only in graphics, but in context. |
