I am so sick of hearing people on these forums complain about their PS2 when in most cases they are not taking care of it right.

-The PS2 was built to stand vertically, If you do not have your machine in that position then the game or the lens can be easily scratched as the game is taken into your machine.
-The vents on the PS2 catch dust very quickly so you should dust it regularly
-I suggest rubbing your games off with alcohol just in case

If after trying these things your problem persists than it is a defective machine. Either that, or your have mis-used it to the point that is is now unfixable.

Umm, the PS2 was made for ether upright or laying down. It doesn't matter which way you have it. If you notice, the little PS2 logo on the CD-Rom can turn to best match your way. And use furniture polish not alcohol, alcohol will eat your CD making it weaker. Also liquid car wax will work better, but is hard to get right without scratching the serface more.

The PS2 is only supposed to sit on its side if you have the proper stand (same for upright), Sony didn't foresee any problems until after massive shipping, which is when they started making the stands.

why does everyone hate x-box? WHATD IT EVER DO TO YOU!!!! cept for ripoff sony completly (thats a diff case)

P.S.
Dracon ive thrown goku72's ps2 against wall amany time and it still hasnt broke so what did u do to urs?
In response to Nadrew
Hmm, i have always had mine laying flat and never had a problem with it. I have a stand someplace, but i dont have room in the entertainment stand it sits on to sit it upright.

I read in some magazine that when the PS2 is upright, and the disc has a label on it like when you rent it, it will scratch the inside on the ps2. I have the same problem as Dracon. The first time it happened I took it to a game place and the guy took it apart, did nothing to it, and put it together again and it worked. Now its broken again though and I've sorta ingnored it for about 2 months.
It has nothing to do with the parts, its the way you people use them. I have had mine on a rug ever since I bought it, and have never had 1 problem... ever! I have even put it through prolonging nights of gameplay trying to re-beat Zone of the Enders, which I have beaten it 26 times(Each game completion time taking me about 5 hours straight of play, and sometimes I beat it 2x in a row on those nights I have nothing else to do.). Not to mention it going through Final Fantasy 7, 9, and 10 five or six times. I have also taken it when I go vacationing, and we all know the airport takes care of our baggage very nicely.

and so, while standing vertical how will the disk remain in place?
In response to Dareb
The disk never moves, the laser does, the disk stays nice and secure in its tray.
I had this problem with my PS2 and was able to solve it with a Maxell CD cleaner. It's a CD with six little brushes on the surface. Shouldn't cost more than $14.

Oh flip! A cop!
::Hides whicsky behind back while cop passes::
In response to Dareb
I wondered that myself, but it turns out that the disc tray has a little lip around the bottom edge (bottom if it's standing vertical) that keeps the disc held in the tray...

Ah, someone who actually helped me with my problem instead of whining and complaining! Thanks =) I'll check into that CD Cleaner

A friend of mine recently had PS2 problems. We bought a cleaner but the PS2 was so dirty that it could not read the cleaning disk. Since his warranty expired a year or two ago and Sony would charge a lot for the repair, we decided to try to fix it ourselves. We ended up following the directions here (the Cleaning the Laser section). We have not had any problems since.
My bro's old one did this... try adjusting the thing that holds the CDs while it's trying to read it, when I did that enough it would play it after enough times. Plus it only did it on PS1 games on the PS2 for me.

I thought mine was way beyond saving. When I first got it it didn't even read playstation1 games but after I took it apart and did it myself, *laughs at sony for all the money he saved*, it worked like a charm. Just take the little screws on the bottom off, there are rubber and plastic covers over each one. You will need patience and a really small screwdriver and organization in order to put the screws in their correct spots. After you take the top case off, with the "PS2" logo on it, take the top that covers the lens of. It is black and has a warning: DONOT STARE DIRECTLY INTO LASER IT GIVES OFF RADIATION. Get a tiny screwdriver and undo teh screws arounf their. When I took teh scews out mine it fell in a crevace down in the PS2 but luckily I was able to remove it be careful about that part. after you remove the lens coverer, get a can of compressed air or blowdryer and blow through the whole system nad the lens. Take a cotton ball or a q-tip and swipe the lens a couple times. BELIEVE ME it wil work. Good luck to you and I hope, it'll work, you get your PS2 working again.

You should note that if you do tamper with the PS2, any kind of guarantee you had is destroyed, permanently. If it breaks down beyond repair and you tampered with it, they won't ship you a new one. Just FYI.
