WASHINGTON (March 17) - President Bush on Monday gave Saddam Hussein a 48-hour deadline to flee Iraq or face a U.S.-led invasion, saying American forces will wage war ''at a time of our choosing.''

The president, commander in chief of 250,000 U.S. troops poised at the borders of Iraq, told the Iraqi people, ''The day of your liberation is near.''

Bush issued his ultimatum after U.N. allies refused to back his bid for a resolution sanctioning military force. The diplomatic defeat forced Bush to move toward war accompanied by Britain, Spain, Australia and a handful of other nations in his self-described ''coalition of the willing.''

Bush warned that war could lead to retaliatory strikes by terrorists on U.S. interests at home and abroad, and said he had ordered increased security at airports and along U.S. waterways.

''These attacks are not inevitable. They are, however, possible,'' Bush said. ''We will not be intimidated by thugs and killers.''

Bush spoke after deciding to raise the nation's terrorism alert from yellow to orange, the second-highest category of risk.

For the first time since he drew the nation's attention to Iraq last fall, Bush focused on the questions most asked by Americans:
Why war? And why now?

Spelling out the threat, he said Saddam has weapons of mass destruction he might share with terrorists, has a history of hating America and is a destabilizing force in the Middle East.

''The United States did nothing to deserve or invite this threat, but we will do everything to defeat it. Instead of drifting along toward tragedy, we will set a course toward safety,'' the president said from the White House.

''The tyrant will soon be gone,'' he said.

I'm aware of this also. But, the US has the cures for all the stuff in Iraq, which they may use on the states. But Canada doesn't, so guess who iraq will attack? US CANADIANS!!

I don't think hes going to be really worried about destroying canada when he has about 6 countries, led by america, kicking the crap out of him from inside of his country.

Actually, the battles will most likely stay in Europe or nearest countries rather than our own. But no worries, if anything does enter your country you guys could always use that 1 tank you have stored away for a rainy day. *snickers at RaeKwon's statement he once had about Canada being better because they don't need military power*
Actually, you and I are both pretty safe, very small towns in the US and most of Canada will most likely be the last populations to feel the war effects.

Exactly, think of it this way, we have the most powerful country in the world "US" and 6 other countries, vs. One tiny country. What's the fuss? It'll be over in a matter of minutes if the US gets mad.

I'm not actually sure if you're serious or not, but what military spending Canada actually does make is spent very well. Our fighting force, which consists of ranger units and other highly-trained troops, doesn't have a strength-in-numbers advantage but is certainly something to be contended with if/when it actually gets fielded.

The primary strongpoint of the Canadian forces are its combat pilots, however, who are second to none. We lack the budget, but we can make due with a few high-tech pieces of equipment.

Afganistan has lesser technology and less people, yet we whiped out the Taliban in about I think it was 2 months... Iraq in the Gulf War had about 3 times as many soldiers, and we crushed them in 2 weeks, making it the shortest war we've ever had... And we won it. I think it was like over a few thousand casualties on their side and on our side, we had 1 missing in action, who everyone believes is still alive as a prisinor of war somewhere in Iraq.

We lack the budget, British Columbia that is, because Gordan Cambell spends our money, goes to Hawaii, and gets drunk, then caught by the cops.

No, but seriously, we have one of the best navies in the world. We we're part of Britain, remember? ;)

The taliban hid in there caves, hence the word coward. That's why we had to constantly flush them out and they are still around hiding elsewhere.

Haha.. I could've had that war over in one day. If they would've let me in charge of the procedure, I would of had it done in one day. Yep, would've just sent some hot babes to dance outside of the caves, they would've came running like the cowards they are. Once they are out, snipe them one by one. Yup, that's how us "pros" deal with things no a days.
