i have to say Dreq and Ronn are the most under-rated talented DM programmers around. Nobody appreciates their skill.

I hold high respect for Ronn, in the case that I also knew him for a few years before BYOND. He was a good programmer for the while that he stayed here, but then he lost his wife and his life went downhill, but he was a very skilled programmer indeed. Unfortunately I havn't heard from him in a few months....

No offense intended to anyone, but I don't think Garthor or Volte should be in there. They're good, no doubt about it, probably much better than me(I know Garthor is, and I've seen promising work by Volte), but you excluded a lot of really great programmers. To name a few, Gughunter, Skysaw, and Shadowdarke. I would put all three of those before Garthor and Volte. Also, just as a side note, LummoxJR is the best here, rivaled only by Deadron. Theres no way Garthor is better than him. Oh, I forgot, Spuzzum is pretty damn good as well(add him to my little list up there).

I'm getting rusty at dm. My damn attention span is geting shorter by the week I swear. When I'm able to calm down for a little while I can usually make some pretty cool stuff. I wasnt so hyper last night, and I made myself a system to display numbers on the hud(with two numbers to a tile, I could do more, but I already had large numbers made for me). It was pretty good for me, because I can't usually sit still long enough to get something done.
It's just a little frustrating to see the best programmers on BYOND underrated because a person likes someone with lesser skills better. | |
This is why I put the disclaimer at the top stating that I only passed judgements on what I have seen. These other programmers you talk about I probably have never seen in action before, or maybe it was so briefly that I had forgotten about them, but these are my opinions... again, on what I have seen.
I'm pretty sure the others you have mentioned are great, and I am not trying to disrespect their contributions to the community, but I clearly cannot pass judgement due to name popularity. I personally feel that there are probably alot of unknown but great developers on byond.
To put up a list saying [x] is better than [y] is pretty pointless. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses in the byond community, so how can one sum up a mass community to 15 people, saying they are "better" than the rest. quote from Soccerguy13 from another post "Even...in DM,there cant really be a "best"." | |

But when rating best programmer it can be difficult to rate since best programmer is kind of ambigous as there are many traits that go into programming, as well and many styles. [x] might have the entire syntactical layout of BYOND memorized so he could easily program without ever touching the reference, but [y] might be an awsome problem solver that is new to the syntax of BYOND and needs to use the reference. So desipte [x] might appear more talented when asked specific questions, [y] will generally produce more effecient better looking programs. This is probably pretty much what you were saying but moral of the story is you can't judge somthing without setting strict criteria on what is to be rated and how it is to be rated. | |
Well if you rated all the Byonders on their programming, artistic ability, and game design skill I would probably fall in the range of 1 to NUM_BYONDERS where NUM_BYONDERS is a constant that represents the total number of Byonders :).
