What a shame... no worthy mention of Kemet.. though far from finish it being my 1st Epic game an all.... has the fight to win for those types, but also non-PK areas where you are allowed to pick a trade and skill and level in that. Also once everything is in place, I plan to switch over from a NPC economy to a PC resource/economy. There fore if someone in the game doesn't log in and play the brewer of beer, guess what.. prices of Beer will go up, Inns and Bars will be empty, and no one will see a beer in the game. Save for other skills etc..

And I've been working on Kemet more lately, would be nice if more people made it past the Halls of Gods and got down to earth so see what my game is all about. I constantly get the reply or rudely informed, that its HARD.. and its hard cause I intend for it to be hard. Not a walk through the park to feed player's egos through the use of a single variable. (Stats/Level/Power)

Give Kemet a chance, and expore the deeper sides of it, its there. Just the other day I saw someone who learned how to read and write in the game so he could buy blank scrolls, to write his own in game Newspaper, and leave them laying around for other PCs, talk about RPG and Community interaction! Wished there were more players like those.

Cheers!

I think that if people don't like the crowds they get, they should just hand-pick 'em. Have an 'Authorized members only area'. Start up your own forum for these people. Why not?

Also, charging has an effect on people who play the game. If you charge people to go to the members only areas, they're not gonna cuss loads, as they know they've paid and don't wanna be band.

This discussion has made me change project to a more interesting, better planned venture. But you're not even gonna get the name.

Thank you all for sharing your opinions. First, I just have a little "beef" with SilkWizard. Calling my opinion "unfounded" is a bit redundant, don't you think? No one's opinions are ever wrong, unjust, or unfounded. It is their opinion, they are just sharing what is on their mind or what they believe.

I don't want to start up a major discussion about this because it isn't worth it, but opinions most certainly can be unfounded, or even wrong. If I am of the opinion that women are less intelligent than men simply because they tend to have longer hair, then I am wrong.

People are taught in grade school that "Your opinion is always right." Holding on to this belief is a bit childish. If you don't have any facts or evidence to back up your opinion, then it is unfounded.

And by disputing my opinion about whether or not opinions can be right or wrong, you'd be contradicting yourself.

Actually "unfounded" means it's founded on nothing. If an opinion is based on ignorance, then yes, it's unfounded. I also disagree that an opinion can't ever be wrong, but that's a subject for a much more complex discussion.

Also, he was correct in pointing out that you do tend to make a post like this every 3 months or so. He's not the only one who's sick of it. It's one thing to share an opinion--it's another to bring it up again and again for no reason.

That would be cool. The only reason I didn't do it, is because of the lack of graphics. The programming is easy, but man, those graphics are confusing to make!

time for my 2 cents in this i guess.

1.Dracon,all i can say is i agree with ya here.there are very few people you can trust on here.hell,i got a whole line of staff and i only trust 2.one of them is my neighbor.i think the BYOND Community is pathetic with all those types of people you named, dracon.

2.its bad enough we got trouble makers who spam, steal games, etc but i am seeing nothing done about them.at least to the extent i expect.oy i hope this is all resolved soon and i can go back to my peaceful game making with having to be pager spammed on how my game isnt 3d.

thats all i got to say i guess

It's nothing really to argue about, I just think each time it gets more and more severe. Then again, there I go with "I think" stating my opinion. I'm done at this subject to avoid any more arguing. =)

Is MUDs!

Multi User Domains.

You can build them with BYOND.

But you can play them through Telnet.

Which means you can bypass the BYOND community altogether.

Which is good.

So lets all make MUDs.

Other than that, here are some points to ponder.

1) BYOND is too centralized. It would be better if people went and created their own communities around specific topics, such as MUD building, instead of staying at the central BYOND.com location. DWO did this, why can't everyone else?

2) BYOND does have a hub, which is fine, but you don't have to use it. Its totally possible to connect to games without ever visiting the hub. All you have to do is give them the address, point them to a BYOND download site, and let them connect straight to your game. (This is all the better if you use telnet, because then they never have to download BYOND at all.)

3) Even if BYOND does go down, it doesn't have to take you with it. There is nothing at BYOND.com that you need to use BYOND. The reference and plenty of other helpful programming information is available through F1, and if you want other people to work with, form a community around the type of things you want to make.

The BYOND forums here are really just a place where people of a huge variety of different, conflicting interests merge together to bicker, argue, and flame each other out. At least, that's what we'd see if it weren't for the moderators. While there are decent descussions, there's really no reason for anyone to be here. It would really be much simpler if everyone just spread out and created their own communities.

Remember, BYOND games can be accessed without the hub, and they can be run without getting involved with BYOND. (If Gughunter is right, compiled programs that are run with the .exe will automatically download BYOND if it isn't already installed, so all you need to do is send people the zip.) Think of BYOND as the required files to make what you want happen.

Things there really should be seperate communitites for (and heck, maybe there are):

BYOND DragonBall Z games
BYOND-based MUDs
High-end BYOND programming (for those elite programmers)

I'm hungry now, so that's all I can think of.
(Remind me to establish another BYOND-based MUDing community.)

Or, of course, we could always just ditch computers and get lives.

And if all that fails, the alternative solution to everything is Salsa!

Egads people! What is wrong with you? This whole community is going to hell.

Wonderful sermon Mr. Fire and Brimstone =P

There is a reason why BYONDers don't act like mature adults, because they aren't mature adults. If you can't come to deal with that fact, then avoid dealing with the people. You can make games for BYOND without having to deal with people.

I wish we could all pull together as a community to try to make it a better place!

To sound very pessimistic, that won't happen. However, you can take it upon yourself to make some good games, or make other positive contributions to the community.

Amen!

As for the MUDding community, im sort of trying to work on it. Digitalmouse is supposedly working on a site for me, so we will see how that goes.

I believe all BYOND games are already MUDs, your reffering to text based games =P. By the way, we want the mud board back, mud board, mud board!

Anyone ever use Mudconnect.com for a MUDing community?
Or if you are still in need of an alternate gaming community, Gamedev.net is always there.

Okay, back to the matter at hand. I guess what ticked me off again to post this is after searching the community for a bit, to find little good in the community. Oldies treating newbies badly instead of helping them, BYONDime worshiping creeps, and recently I've gotten many threats to have my sprites to my new game stolen! And the game is barely into the Beta Stage! Of course, I will not mention their name(s), because although I have disrepect for them, I want no harassment to be brought against them.

"MUD" is to BYOND games as "RPG" is to any game where you play the role of something. It may be technically correct, but it more commonly refers to something specific.

Foomer is a genius!!!!

In response to Foomer
Heh, that's only a good solution for those of you that like MUDs (using "MUD" to refer to text-based games, as I assume Foomer is)

I, for one, am extremely graphically oriented... I'm not a fan of text-based games... I much prefer having visual feedback for my actions, and not just written words... I just don't like the abstractness of pure text... I like being able to SEE myself walk into a room in a castle, instead of having to read it and visualize it for myself...

Perhaps it's a weakness in my imagination... But for whatever reason, I just don't enjoy text-only games...

So, if BYOND were someday magically turned to pure-MUD, I'd never stick around... Sure, you might be thinking that wouldn't be a big loss, but I'd be willing to say that a lot of the players around here share my opinion, and also would be gone... That'd be a great loss to the community, stemming from a proposed "solution"... (of course, depennding on your perspective, losing a large number of the current BYOND players might actually help, but let's just ignore that point...lol)

So, that solution isn't universally applicable... It's only good for those who like text MUDs...

Heh, I just realized something, I've never even had a Telnet client running on this computer...
