I was thinking about tips. I tip my barber. I tip the pizza guy, I tip the waiter. But... are you supposed to tip the people at Sonic? The people who carry the food out to your cars?
...nobody tips the people at McDonald's :(

I don't tip barbers, or people that work at food places (or anybody for that matter) because I see no reason to. Why should I give them more of my money, when I already have to pay for the service they are performing anyway.

It’s basically showing you’re grateful for the job they did. Whatever the service may have been. RaeKwon |

Ok, so what happens if they are awful at their service and the mess up, do you tip em then? I don't tip at all, I'm sort of a cheap-0.

Why tip these people? Because for the most part, they get paid a lot less because their employer expects their wages to be supplemented by tips...
Most food servers get paid barely over minimum wage (and in fact, I believe a lot are paid under minimum wage, because of some loophole in the wage law that accommodates tips) When you pay for your food, you are not paying for the server that brought it to your table, or when they brought you the extra ketchup, or when they refilled your drink, or when they stopped 5 times just to check if your meal is alright... All of those things are supposed to be paid for through a tip... Your bill only pays for the price of the food you ate (and the costs of preparing it and such)... That's it... Yes, the restaurant uses some of the money you are paying to pay the workers... But the fact is that they really don't pay servers as much as they deserve for all that they do... And the customer is expected to make up that difference through tipping... Not tipping is extremely rude in my opinion... Unless, of course, the server didn't do a good job...in which case, withholding the tip is how you tell them that... Not tipping anyone is basically spitting in their faces even if they do a good job of waiting on you... You're telling them that what they've done for you isn't worth it... And that's just wrong... I'd seriously suggest that you reevaluate your attitude on this point... And I've never even worked a job that required tipping... In fact, the only "real" job that I've ever had prohibited accepting tips...because they paid well enough for the job I was doing (and in fact, I've turned down many, many offered tips in that time)... But that doesn't mean that it's difficult to understand how it is for these people... Tipping them is the polite and decent thing to do... I persoanlly tip a lot of people... Any restaurant server (not including fast food, of course...those people aren't doing anything special, like actually waiting on me... and no, typing my order into a machine, taking my money, and handing me a bag is not "waiting on" someone...), anyone who cuts my hair, and any food delivery people (pizza guys, mostly)... But anyways, the simple fact is that not tipping a waitress (in a real restaurant) is extremely rude... You really should start... Pizza delivery guys really don't get paid well, and generally rely on tips to make enough money, so that's another tip-worthy service... Barbers are an iffy sort of thing, since they really do get paid fairly well for what they're doing, and they're not going out of their way to do anything extra for you (like a waitress does)... |

If they don't do it right, or just plain dont try, you dont tip em. I only tip when I have enough money so that I can, because im actually quite poor.

No, I don't... Because there aren't any nearby, and I've never been to one...lol
I'm not sure if I would if I were to ever eat at one, though... They're like those old "Car Hop" things, right? Where the waitress (usually on rollerskates) brings the food out to your car? If so, it depends on if they pay them regular wages, or waitress wages (like I mention above, most food servers don't get paid that much, and have to make the rest up in tips to make a living), and also on how much they actually do... If all they do is take your order, then bring your food to you and you never see them again, then no need to tip... But if they come to your car periodically, and ask if you need anything else (like drink reills, more ketchup, etc)...pretty much anything that resembles them actually waiting on you, then yes, tip them... But a simple act of handing you your food and forgetting about you is not enough of a service to warrant a tip... |

If they are on rollerskates then the deserve something. Tipping isnt really a big thing in Australia, its sort of reserved for restruants. I actually like to tip, but since no one else does I always come off looking sleazy.

I have never tipped someone, or seen anyone else tipping someone, in my entire life. There just isn't a culture of tipping in Australia. (Which I think simplifies things a lot.)

Its actually better that way for the same reason uniforms are manditory at some schools. It means that people who cant afford to tip well arent looked down upon.
Although the Australian econamy really does suck, so maybe its what we are doing wrong =P |

I'm not exactly a fan of school uniforms, but I basically agree with the reasoning behind them. =) Although the Australian econamy really does suck, so maybe its what we are doing wrong =P Hey, it's getting better now. And I doubt it's really that much of a problem. =) |

Speak for yourself, I never voted for him. =P
(The fact that I am under the legal voting age is, of course, a secondary matter of only minor importance.) I have only one fear. That fear is: The prospect of promotion for the weirdly zombie-like Phillip "illegal immigrants are not human" Ruddock (Immigration Minister) if Costello (Federal Treasurer) becomes PM after John Howard (current Prime Minister). My mind is now scarred forever with that thought... (No political flame wars please. I really, really hate those.) |

If I get mediocre service, I tip exactly 15%, but if they do well, I can go up to 25%. It's always good to reinforce good behavior! Fast food joints don't normally require tips. Unless you've been shown to a table, have an assigned waiter, and get food delivered to you, don't tip. And don't forget to tip your barber/hair-stylist as well! |
