I have been thinking about getting satellite internet access provided by DirectTV (since I am not in the "area" to obtain Cable or DSL access), and I was wondering, is Satellite really faster then 56k? Is it better for high-end graphical gaming and surfing then 56k? If so how much faster? I dont want to spend nearly twice as much money on some access that barely can breech over the 56k limit.
All I know that it varies from the weather (get best reception fromm clear skies, and very low reception in stormy times)

'Hpoe this helps!

Well, I dont usually mind that. Since its practically the same thing with 56k. But, DirectTV says it stays on 24/7 with no drops! Now im confused o_O.

Since Satellite is basically radio-based, weather such as rain and snow and wind has little, if no effect on the reception of data. If that were so, Satellite TV would have died out long ago.

You might have some problem if you live in an area were you have many electrical storms, but even in those cases standard TCP/IP methods of re-requesting/re-transmitting of data are more than sufficient to get around the problems that electrical stroms would cause with satellite transmissions...

It also could depend on the type of system - I know of two: download via satellite and upload via phone (so you get a higher upload speed than with a normal 56K modem), or true download/upload via satellite.

Um Satilite does start to mess up doing Storm beacuse we have Directv and It starts to get all glitchy.

You also have to note satellite connections aren't exactly easy for things like online gaming, and companies like DirectTV have no method of upload (they leave that to you), and are impossible to connect to from another computer (hosting an online games, etc..), but some low-level companies have no blocks on uploading, or connecting.

I would imagine that they have a package deal so that you can do uploads via 56K modem, but you must have up/down traffic capability somewhere otherwise how would browser requests work?

I think "impossible" is a little harsh... once a you have things setup properly, your computers works on the net just like any other computer... you just have faster downstream bandwidth than upstream (like DSL) - and for web browsing that is perfect. I have heard of one satellite system handling one tv and three computers (they had an internal network) with next to nothing for trouble.

It's next to impossible to connect to because the satellite companies like it that way. It's just like some ISPs who have all their customers behind a NAT router.

Then you must have crappy local satellite providers! =)

I myself don't, but I've heard of it before. My ISP however, used to have everyone behind some strange NATlike configuration. As long as I knew what a server on the internet thought my IP was I was fine for hosting, though.

Having satellite myself, I may be able to answer most of your questions.

is Satellite really faster then 56k?

Yes. My downloads go at an average of 80kbps.

Is it better for high-end graphical gaming and surfing then 56k?

Actually, no. Because of all of the places that the satellite has to relay the information, satellite has high ping, and is not the best for surfing and online gaming. My advice is to get a free dial-up ISP and keep that modem for gaming and BYOND. Due to my satellite, I'm restricted to Chatters. :(

Hope this helps you out.

You get good download speeds, but upload is via a 56k modem. So it's not all that useful for gaming.

Me want T3. Or £10,000,000.
