ok, is there any posible way how i can cofigure my firewall so i can host without my dad notices it?
i got win xp, my own pc (4 pc's on 1 network)
depends on what you have for a connection to the internet. if you are using a type of cable-modem or DSL-modem that has a built-in firewall (and it is working/configured), then *that* firewall is the one that needs an few open port or two for game hosting. Then if you use a firewall on your machine, you would just then open the same port(s). You might also need to turn on some sort of "port-forwarding" feature in the internet modem so that data coming in that port is forwarded to your computer. This all assumes you can access it without your dad knowing.

Why not just tell him (if he controls the modem access) you need a port open so that you can play games with other online friends? That would be a lot safer in the long run. If a problem developed later on, your dad would then know what the open port was for when trying to solve that problem.

Then you'll have to figure out how to get around your dad to open ports on the firewall - we don't know your dad, so why should we risk our advice, or his wrath, on your behalf?

but how to open ports?!?
my dad isn't that smart with pc's so he wouldn't notice it i guess..
and if he does, it wouldn't be a major punishment...
he isn't mad fast.

Patience, Grasshopper.

What type of router is it? (Full model number if possible.) If you can find the router's manual, look at it to determine what IP address you need to go to in order to change its settings. (You can often find PDF versions of manuals on manufacturers websites.)

Then point your browser to that IP address, type in the password (the manual will list the default password; if the password has been changed, either guess or ask your dad what it is). Then look for an option called "Port forwarding" or "Virtual server" or something similar, and set all traffic on a specific port or range of ports to be forwarded to the internal IP address of your computer.
