I am fairly excited about 'Game Maker' it looks promising.

Take a look at these screenshots from the.

But than again nothing can compete with BYOND.

One of the things that stand out in it, is the exceptionally good UI. I hope BYOND makes it easier to have exceptionally good UI soon.
Actually a lot of stuff can compare to BYOND, it just doesn't work online. :P

Sometimes that can be a good thing.

Yeah, it would be great if BYOND had that full screen support. I'm also envious of the fact that you can download and run GM games without downloading anything else first.

Here's a question I'd like a moderator or anyone that's hosting the contest to answer..

Are you allowed to edit a game from game maker that gives you the source?

I don't like the idea of that, but it's not my choice :P

Even if you were allowed to, and did, you probably wouldnt come close to winning with something like that. Why bother?

Some of those source codes are exceptional. It'd be very good if somebody knows what they're doing.

But your working off of another persons project, and thats not going to be looked at as highly, even if it were allowed.
"But than again nothing can compete with BYOND." I can't 100% agree there... Game Maker looks very promising compared to byond 3.0.

SOUND:

GM 5: MP3, Ogg, wav, midi
Byond 3: midi, wav
Winner: GM

Graphics:

GM 5: Opengl, direct X. (3d and 2d)
Byond 3: bitblt
Winner: GM

Code:
GM 5: click and drag (like RPG Maker) & GM code
Byond 3: DM code
Winner: Split

Online:
GM 5: online play (need to code the engine yourself)
DM 3: inbuilt online play and CGI system.
Winner: Byond

Expandability:
GM 5: DLL files
Byond 3: none
Winner: GM

Interface:
GM 5: Standalone, full screen
Byond 3: DS, No full screen
Winner: GM

Overall winner: GM 5

Byond can easily take the throne when 4.0 come out. That if they make it right. But with all the time they are taking I think it's going to be a big release.

BYOND can do MP3; use the browser! Admittedly GM does win here.

BYOND was meant to be functional, not pretty.

Code:
GM 5: click and drag (like RPG Maker) & GM code
Byond 3: DM code

Code is much better than point-and-click in my opinion. I haven't checked out Game Maker yet so I can't say much about its code.

As you say, BYOND excels here. By far. The hub and pager systems are also great.

Expandability:
GM 5: DLL files
Byond 3: none
Winner: GM

Allowing DLL files is a serious security risk.

Interface:
GM 5: Standalone, full screen
Byond 3: DS, No full screen
Winner: GM

This will change when BYOND 4.0 comes out. And I think I have a partial solution to this anyway; stay tuned to BYONDscape over the next few months!

Overall winner: GM 5

Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. Fortunately, most of BYOND's weaknesses are going to be fixed in version 4.0 (except the 3D bit, although that's probably a good thing).

[snip] with all the time they are taking I think it's going to be a big release.

Oh, yes. Definitely. It had better be! (Tom, you listening to this? And Nadz, are you passing a printed copy of this to Dan if he's still in your basement? =P )

Ooooh, I just thought of one area in which Game Maker excels; if someone comes up to you and starts begging for GM, just link to the Game Maker install file and say it's a utility that will give them GM powers... >=D
