Ok get this: My friend calls me up. Everytime he turns on his pc like seconds later this window comes up saying a shut down was started by like NT Adminstractive thingy, and gives him 1 min to save all his files. Crazy.

Hours later my frined online tells me he gets the same thing. I was like WTF

almost 12 at night, I log on, and I get it suddenly! When I re-start my pc I close down MSN and Yahoo messanager right away before re-connecting and it works fine.

My first friend has cable so hes always connected. Me N my other firned have Dial Up. Dont you think it odd that 2 people in the same state and one in like Kanasa have this excate same trouble?

Yup, I'd bet that's what it is, alright...

Earlier today (hmmm, considering that it's 4 AM here, I suppose that would be earlier yesterday), I get a call from my girlfriend, who lives in a house that has two XP boxes (one of which they've only had for three days)... And both of them had the same problem... Shortly after startup, an alert would pop up telling them that Windows would shut down in one minute, and they should save all unsaved work or it will be lost...

One of the computers ended up going into Blue Screen of Death shock...lol

At the time, I suspected that it was a virus of some sort... That just doesn't sound very much like an actual Microsoft error alert... I've never heard of timed shutdowns resulting from actual Windows errors...lol

As for how it ended up on both computers at roughly the same time, our assumption was that it was the fault of her younger sister, who has been using both comps lately, and who likes using file sharing programs (and had installed one on the new comp just yesterday)... So it seemed that she had been on both, and had done something she shouldn't have on both... (she's not exactly tech savvy, and is likely to accept or open any file she gets)

But, another family member contacted Hewlett Packard (both of the comps are HPs) and gave the details of the problems to them, and the tech people on the line told them that it was an XP problem, and that they'd send out an update disc to patch the problem...

Of course, this was sometime in the early stages of this worm's attack (according to the timelines I've seen, the worm appeared in force at around 2-3 PM EST, and this was only around 4 when she called me), so no one really knew yet what it was (aside from it's originator, of course), and I assumed then that the advice the HP people gave was probably more informed than my own assumptions, so I wrote it off as just an XP bug that we'd have to wait to get fixed...

But then tonight, I read about this new worm... And now it all makes sense...lol So tomorrow, I'm going over there to give them the bad news and try to get things fixed... Luckily, my girlfriend's own computer is a Win '98 box (as is mine), so it's not infected, and can be used to download the security patch necessary for the other two (they won't stay on long enough to connect to the net and download the patch themselves)

My freind was telling me about this too, he said he ran his virus scanner and it got rid of it though. He said he had a minute before his computer shut down.
Thats happening to me! Arg! 30 seconds till it goes down again... :(
