If you have a Ps2 can you plz help me?
My Ps2 says disc read error and I don't know how I'm gonna fix it. Only a few games work like Ac3SL,Gta3 and maybe some other ones sicne I'm trying to play Tekken 4 (the disc has tons of scratches) and it mostly says disc read error for Tekken 4. Gta 3 has smuges on it and a few scratchers and that works perfectly still.
If it has tonnes of scratches, thats why! If it doesn't than there is a chance it is a Foreign Import, e.g. If you live in USA it might be from UK or Japan.

Also, Off Topic is now tryign to be a bit more On Topic, so in future you should use a PS2 Forum instead!

P.s. I admit some recent posts are VERY off topic but if you read the announcements you will see that they should be more On Topic now.
If you have a mod chip, that might be the problem.

PS2.. Hummm.

The older versions had lasers that broke quite easily and had trouble reading discs. Also if you notice some discs are different types. Some are blue back and some are silver. That dose make a difference! Maybe your laser is haveing trouble with one kind of PS2 disk?

Another thing is, if you have a Mod chip, mod chips wear the laser eye out quicker. Look into that.

Apperently it is easy and cheap to replace a eye, I dont know how though.

(About the post thing, if they dont want off topic stuff they should get rid of it. "Off topic needs to be more on topic" sounds lame and retarted. Just remove the Off topic forum then so you are wasting time removiing all the not on topic off topic forums. If that made any sense, the rest sure dosent!)

This is perfectly ok. Conserving bandwidth basically means dont hold convorsations on the forum, dont talk to people directly(posting to a specific person). You can get help with other things in off topic, even ps2 problems(this problem has come up before though I think).

Why was my screaming post locked then? Id like to know that. It was asking for assistance just like this thread was. But it was still locked.

(BTW I realize this isnt the place to ask this, taking up space, BUT I dont want to start a whole new thread, forgive me this one time!)

I don't know much about my Ps2 it seems like its an old version and it can only read the oens with black and silver.
Where do you get the mod chips?

Well, this is just a guess - your problem wasn't really related to gaming, while problems with game consoles are related to gaming. The people who read this forum are more likely to have a PS2 than to have the problem you posted. In your case, you'd be better off seeing a doctor or something.

As far as I know, mod chips are illegal. You can buy them off of ebay! PS mod chips are very very easy to install. I installed about 15 mod chips (made a nice profit :]). Ps2 mod chips are like whoa.... There's a lot to work with, but I still managed to work mine in :)

*edit*

What's the big difference in the color of the disc? I have a few silver ones, a few black ones, some blue ones, and I think an orange one.

Yeah, I still laugh when I see posts that say, "Airjoe! Plz read!" or "READ NOW GUGHUNTER!"

It puts a spring in my step; rocks my world 8) lol.

Different colors of disks are proven to read better or lower depending on the laser eye. An example is my DVD player once played a black backed colored CD-R of a VCD, but when I tried to make more vcds of a silver quialtly back it refuses to read them. The colors do matter in some cases.

Mod chips are not illegal. Most are use to play imports because most systems do not support multi regional games. Another reason is for $12 I can get a gold finger mod chip which supports Game Shark, Action Replay, Mod Chip and enough memory card space for 12 memory cards. How much would that cost you if you paied seperatly? Its how you use the mod chip that would be illegal.

As for the other thing, thats ridiciouls, off topic is off topic, you mise well just make a gaming forum and get it done with.

There. :)
My friend ran into this problem also. there's two things that i can think of that are wrong with it:

first off, I have an old ps2 as well(bought when first shipment came in, stayed up all night in line for it). Some conditions make your ps2 preform differently. I keep mine in the basement(my room) at a healthy 70 degrees. My friend has his room upstairs(second story) and his room is roughly 85 all the time. His also has disc read errors...you have to realize that any computer components are allergic to heat. Suggest moving it somewhere else if you have it in a hot location.

The first thing you can do is buy a ps2 cleaner kit. It comes with a cd with tiny brushes and a small bottle of some liquid...anyways, that will help clean the laser eye, incase it's dirty. Use the cleaning kit weekly if need be.

If the cleaner doesn't work, of course, it's also partially your disc. Run it luke warm water for 10 seconds, then take a TISSUE OR PAPER TOWEL only, to wipe it off, gently, in circular motions, to avoid all damage to the disc. this will remove smudges and fingerprints(for those who are clumsy with discs).

Only other option would be your ps2 has something loose/broken inside...in my friend's case, his disc tray was out of alignment, therefore reading games whenever it damed well pleased, which wasn't very often.
Here is a link to PS2 Disk Read Error FAQ. My friend and I found the Cleaning The Laser section extremely useful.

Actually there are a number of US laws that make the use of mod chips perfectly nice and illegal.

There is a white gear inside the playstation 2 that adjusts the angle at which the disc is held, and that is your problem. I fixed mine by taking it apart and re-adjusting the gear and everything works perfect. Taking it apart is quite easy. Read this guys post and he'll explain how. Just a warning though, if you do this, the screws that hold the disc tray, are extremely small, so make sure you have a extremly small screw driver, or something to turn it atleast. click here
Take the disc and clean it with furnisher polish or car polish(the type in a spray bottle). This will buff out a lot of the scratches, just make sure if you use car poslish to let it dry before cleaning it off(like you would a car). And for the ps2, i have learned that it will run games a lot better if it is in tower form, i have no idea why, but we bought this game for my little brother(it was called cubix) and nomatter what i tryed, the cd didnt work, there was not a scratch on it. Other cds worked, but cubix did not. So i started playing with stuff, when i tilted it into the tower, the cd ran just fine.

Let me clear this up about the disc colors. Blue means NON-DVD-ROM, Silverish gold means DVD-ROM, and black is ps1. I have never seen orange.

The orange one I have is a burnt one. ;)

Thats because the white gear moves differently, and believe it or not, its not good to keep it in its tower form for some reason, even though it says it is in the owners manuel.
