The first 'Belfast Castle' was built by the Normans in the late 12th century. On the same site a stone and timber castle was erected in 1611. The home of Sir Arthur Chichester, barron of Belfast, was burned down in 1708, leaving only street names (eg Castle Place) to mark the site.

Forest of Belfast
The aim of the Forest of Belfast Initiative is to create a healthy and sustainable urban forest by heightening public awareness of the importance and value of urban trees, improving standards of tree management and increasing tree cover in gardens, school and factory grounds, parks and other sites.
Belfast City Council is a major contributor to the Forest of Belfast initiative, a partnership of 23 organisations promoting urban forestry by encouraging tree planting and greater levels of tree care. Community involvement is central to the initiative and much of the promotional work of the Forest of Belfast involves encouraging residents to take an active interest in their local environment. This is achieved by developing a volunteer Tree Warden scheme and through events such as Tree Fairs, woodland walks and commissioning timber sculptures for sitting in urban woods.

Belfast City Council is committed to improving awareness of man’s effect on the environment and his subsequent influence on biodiversity. The Council particularly wishes to expand opportunities for children and young people and to involve all communities in Northern Ireland. The Council’s aim is to improve the quality of life for all. Belfast Zoo’s Education Service delivers programmes of environmental education to all, but particularly to young people. It has also proved itself as an excellent venue for cross community programmes'.
