There's not much difference. Look at price. Look at speed.
Compare the two. Also, P4s don't overheat. If they start getting too hot, they slow down until it's a nice temperature. |
Lets put it this way, A athlon xp 3000 will not be as powerful as a Pentium 4 3 GHz. This is because the athlon line does not rate there processor by the clock speed. Rater by the older athlon Thunderbird. Pentium 4 is hands down more powerful then an athlon xp when it comes to the top chip in the XP line. (Not an athlon 64/FX which is the new line for AMD)
Now this is a big part to keep in mind. Athlons are generally chiper then a p4 and offer more performance clock for clock. There for you can get more bang for the buck. You can buy an athlon XP 2800 for the same price as a P4 2Giz. While they both run at 2Giz the AMD is much more powerful rating around a p4 2.5Giz. Intel P4: Pros: -HT technology -Top dog (lots of raw power) Cons: -$$ AMD XP: Pros: -price -clock to clock performance vs P4 Cons: -low raw power (clock speed) here is one bench mark done: http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030210/index.html |
Well, I've always heard that AMD processors run circles around Intel ones when it comes to "gaming" with them.
But I'm always so paranoid something unseen is going to happen to my PC, like say, the heatsink or fan breaking on my processor. In which the AMD processors burn to their death and the Intels survive with flying colors. (Please note that the video requires the DivX cideo codec in order to play on your machine.) So - performance over security or vice-versa? You must decide, but I'm happy with my Pentium 4's performance. I can play the same game on an AMD powered machine and an Intel one, and cannot sense that much of a difference. *shurgs* Ida-no! ~Kujila |

I know, i didn't say that AMD's couldn't Multi-task, i said, compared to Pentium's, they dont do as well. Duh. Please no need to cuss either, it's a simple discussion, no one was attacking you in any way...

Speed wise, the Pentium4's run from a cheap 1.8Ghz to 3.1Ghz,(not including overclocking) and the Athalon's
run around the 1.3-1.7Ghz range...but they manage the programs differently than Pentium's.
Also, Athlon's are cheaper in most cases, so if it doesn't really matter on how many programs he wants to use, go w/ Athlon, exspecially if this friend plans to use the computer for a single , main use such as a 24/7 server or something.
If it's a family computer, where different programs will be used alot more often, then you'd want a pentium...
