I liked Exile 3; I got all the way up to Footracer Province, whereupon I got slaughtered. Repeatedly. With much wailing and gnashing of teeth and cries of "flee, you stupid mage, I said FLEE ALREADY!" =P I didn't like Avernum 3 that much though, it just didn't grab me like Exile 3 did. It was probably the spells; Exile's area damage spells (fireball and so on) and field spells (walls of fire, sleep clouds, curse clouds, etc.) really made a great tactical difference. Without them, Avernum was just like hack-and-slash Diablo. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Diablo does it better. Much better. =) Besides, Avernum has turn based combat. Hack and slash + turn based = boring.
