Which processor, and why?

Nah. I just don't really know a WHOLE lot about hardware. But I try to help where I can, and just because I didn't know that P3s run better than P4s doesn't mean I'm some kind of idiot.

If at all possible, try to get a Centrino/Pentium-M series processor - it runs on less power, can run at a lower Ghz-speed (like 1.6Ghz) and still be as fast as faster P4 (we have a 1.8Ghz Centrino-based laptop that runs as fast as my P4 2.4Ghz Toshiba laptop). they are also considered the next generation Pentiums for laptops and possibly desktops. you ought to be able to find loads of comparison data between them on the net...
