Why wouldn't they be? Sometimes you can break down a barrier and you have no more barriers behind it to break down.
Take modern medicine. We search and search for a cure for cancer, but what if there isn't one? I mean you can't cure having your body dissolved by acid, so why does cancer have to have a cure? Because we can imagine a world with a cure? If that is so then reality has no rules.
I'll admit that there probably is a cure for cancer (at the very least in its early stages), but it makes a good example since most people belive that in the future we will have one without even thinking of the possibility that it just doesn't exist.
