The spyware remover I have now either adds its own spyware or doesnt detect some.. I am always getting adds even when my browser isnt open.. I am currently using Spybot - Search and Destroy. Which is the best spyware remover?

Apparently not. :P

I use Ad-Aware, it seems to get the job done. Then again, I usually don't do anything to get ad-ware on my computer in the first place.

I don't think spyware/adware just pops on to your computer. A spyware/adware removing program surely wouldn't put more on you. The only way you get adware/spyware is probably through porn sites, warez sites, and Kazaa. I'm not sure where else would have it.

Anyway, give Ad-Aware a try, it's pretty good.

Both of you download spyware search and destroy RIGHT NOW.

It gets rid of anything, and it also tells you exactly what each thing does, so you can decide if you want to get rid of it or not. Its simply the best.

Yes, spyware does just "pop" onto your computer, even just going to msn.com you get spyware (Avenue b., i think its called). Just surfing the web can get you more spyware then you expect.

*Optional to read* (All just non-sense really)
How they do it? Well, sites like msn.com have ads all over, its for money purposes. All that i know is spyware can attatch itself to images and banners, in which you enter the site, load the banners, and the spyware runs its self entering script, or whatever. I don't really know what i'm talking about though, i'm not so knowledgable in the spyware area, but i do know Search & destroy removes it all, tells you what it is, blocks well known spyware products, and can block the downloads of spyware (Like avenue b) when it detects it running its script, etc.

Summary: The best is spyware, ad-aware is good, but i don't like it as much as S&D.

I still haven't tried S&D (it's been sitting around in my downloads folder for months), but I know Ad-Aware sometimes removed cookies from certain advertising domains. They're not strictly spyware, but you most likely don't want them.
First S&D is one of the best.
second Popups are not spyware.

Ok, Here is what to do now. The first thing to understand is that there is no best. The best you can get is a layer of defense.

first get SpywareBlaster to stop it from getting into your system. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

then get (or keep) S&D & Ad-aware, they both will catch what the other misses.

Finely, Get the Goggle tool bar :), it is the best pop up stopper. Also make sure to keep everything updated.

------------------

Also here are a list of other things you should have :P

firewall: Zone Alarm (best "free" firewall)
http://www.zonelabs.com

Vrius-scaner: avast! 4 Home Download (best "free" scaner)
http://www.avast.com

Anti-Trojans: aČ Free (good Trojan scaner)
http://www.emsisoft.com
----------------------

ps. here is a good site to keep up with Security related stuff. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/security,1

I beg to disagree. It actually has spyware built-in to the toolbar, something which they admit to; they insist it's benign, but that depends on whether or not you want to believe them on that. I rather suspect that Google collects more information than many people would wish it to. After all, collecting information is their business.

Rather than use Internet Explorer at all, I highly recommend Firebird. It has popup blocking built-in, you can configure it to block all kinds of ads, there is tabbed browsing (it's optional, but once you've used it you'll never be able to live without it), and it has literally dozens of extensions available that customise it. Basically, if Firebird doesn't do it, no other browser does it either.

S&D takes it all out, you really should run it through, it found a crapload of stuff ad-ware didnt get off my computer.

I rather use MYIE2, I'm not a big fan of netscape/mozola.

ps. The Goggle search is just too good not to use :P. And you can disable the extra feature as they call it.

Ad-aware also found a lot Spyware S&D missed on mine :P

The truth is both catch what the other misses (use both)
What others have said is good advice, here's another one... if you're on Windows XP, run Windows Update... otherwise, spyware or no spyware, you're in danger of pop-up ads any time you're on the internet.

I used to use Ad-aware but switched to Spybot - Search and Destroy since Ad-aware isn't updated as frequently and incorrectly removed some spyware causeing registry damage. Spybot also has a much nicer interface for selectivly disabling spyware and getting information on the spyware not to mention a slew of other nifty system tools. And if you didn't find the option yet you can immunize your system so you can't get future copies of various spyware.

..? The newest Ad-aware is updated much more then spyware S&D, infact it seems like a 10 to 1 ratio. However I use both being that they both suppot each other well.

last updates:

spybot: 31 Dec 2003
ad-aware: 10 Jan 2004

I pity you. =)

Firebird also has a Google search toolbar. =D Ctrl-K, type your search terms, enter. Easy.

And you can disable the extra feature as they call it.

Yeah, but Firebird is still better. =P

as Crispy mentions, the Firebird (mozilla variant) web-browser comes with a built-in (partially configurable) pop-up blocker. works great for me. same goes for ad-aware for spyware hunting... both pretty good products, considering they are free.

(your mileage may vary)
You might also check out CWShredder. It doesn't do the same thing as Spybot, but it sounds like it can handle a few specific things that Spybot can't.
