I believe that Dantom should recomend a web site to deal with handling downloads of games. Some people can't afford to buy their own domain or bandwith for their sites. I %100 disagree with this whole thing, unless a web site is recommended.
I to disagree, but it is something that must be done. The hub sizes and missusage are just becoming to much.

I agree that the hub has too much bull crap on it, but if we already have to find a new place to upload our files, why not just format the entire hub, and start revieving the hub closer?

Yeah, well, that's because you're not the one paying for the bandwidth.

unless a web site is recommended.

Most free hosting sites should work, as I don't *think* Dream Seeker passes referrer information to the host when downloading files (although I could be wrong). Geocities, Angelfire; all those should work.
Think of it this way, would you come into a programming community and expect it to have something like the HUB? Or even expect it to have a place on-site that you can upload your creations to.
Dantom gave us gold, now people are complaining because they can't give us anymore.

It doesn't. No referrer info whatsoever. No cookies whatsoever. DS does identify itself and give its version number, though. However Geocities and Angelfire and such might be checking to see if the referrer is from their site, in which case it won't work anyways.

Angelfire
Geocities

Both work for the remote file hosting, Angefire has a 1GB/month bandwidth limit, Geocities has some other bandwidth limits (could not find an exact number however a site with low-traffic can easily run above the hourly data-allowance). Angelfire does not appear to have any other bandwidth restictions.

We can no longer afford the bandwidth.

And we can't really review the entries any closer than we are: We've deleted over 500 illegal or inappropriate entries in the last two months alone!

People have uploaded entire movies to their hub entry (you can guess what kind of movies), many have created 50+ megabyte zips of illegal icons, etc etc etc.

Even without all the fraud we probably wouldn't be able to sustain the bandwidth, but the fraud definitely sped up the need to deal with this.

Some browsers don't pass referrer information anyway (I've yet to find one that doesn't, but I'm sure they exist). To accomodate those browsers, they'd have to still allow requests when the referrer isn't given.

Of course, they may not care about those browsers. But it's one possible reason why they might be configured to work in this case.

I assume the people who are saying that Angelfire and Geocities work for sure have actually tested that fact, so I won't bother doing so myself. =)

Solution: Clear the WHOLE hub and stop wasting your time trying to fix an unfixable problem, then only let the hub take reviewed things.

I second that motion! start fresh!

I would advise only clearing out game entries if anything, a lot of demo/libraries can't be replaced. Either they have been lost, or the authors are no longer present, and it would be a shame to lose some of these. Just my opinion.

But spare the BYONDscape channel entries. And the Gughunter entries. Anything else, go ahead and wipe. ;)

How about sparing anything accepted into an official Hub channel or BYONDscape? Unpublished get wiped. :)

The only problem with this is that there are still some games that are pretty good/fun that haven't yet been accepted into the hub, and whose creator is unlikely to re-submit them(ie they left BYOND or lost the source code).
In response to Shades
I agree. If the HUB was cleared many of the entries that are no longer used will be cleared.

This does create many problems. Perhaps a nice 3 month warning saying that most entrys are beind deleted due to change in the ToS or something. Send out an email to everyones keys and such.
In response to Scoobert
As I've thought it over, there is no really clean solution to this, things will be lost anyway you do it(and something has to be done). I think your thought is a good one Scoobert. Not sure about the time frame, but a notice is a good idea.
In response to Jotdaniel
People who have not been on BYOND in ages will not see the announcement so some of their stuff might be lost. A notice for them might be useful.

However, the rest of us have had two weeks with an official announcement at the top of the forums. That should be long enough.

...In other words, I put my games in my free RoadRunner webspace yesterday so I'm taking the time to act all high and mighty while ignoring the fact that some people might have to do some searching. ;)

(I really do think two weeks should have been enough time though.)

Also, since it was debated a few posts up, I would like to point out that it is indeed only the games/utilities that are being taken off of the hub. The announcement specifically states that "libraries, demos, and such" will be handled as they have been in the past.
In response to ACWraith
Ahh, this was sort of in response to the person that screams hub format every time the hub is mentioned, not really in response to the problem at hand. Barring a hub format, everything being done now seems to be good.
In response to Jotdaniel
I still don't agree with the whole hub deal a whole lot, but the bandwidth is a problem. Games run slow already, and game creators can deal with that. They want fast games for action. Still, a website should be recommended to the users.

If and when the downloading option is removed, it still would be a nice thing to have the names of BYOND games on the hub, along with their website provider. This would help people find games that they are looking for.
