Welllll, I've been out of the whole Linux thing for a while now. I had deleted my Linux partition when it stopped functioning, and I'm scared of partitioning now =D. So, any ways, getting back on topic - What do you think the best Linux distribution is? Perhaps you prefer another obscure (in relation to desktop OS's w/ GUIs) operating system, like FreeBSD?

So?

Personally, my last experience with Mandrake 9.2 was nice. Fedora didn't seem as easy to configure as MDK did.

Well, redhat 9 is very "GUI freindly" But if you arnt going for that, than something else is in order.
I'm currently installing Solaris, so I'll tell you how that goes :)

Is Solaris Linux? I thought it was Sun's own homebrewed OS.

Well technicly it's not Linux, but it runs all linux apps straight after install.
Im using SuSE 9.0 Pro, its functioning nicly, the only problem I had was whe it formatted my Hard drive during installation but that was because I screwed up >_<
I like RedHat (I'm using 8.0) but they've been bought out by IBM, I hear. Linux is going to 'the man'! Of course, I've never used any other distro.

Bought out by IBM? All I heard was that IBM liked to use RedHat.

Besides, the changes with the Enterprise versions, etc, are simply good. The businesses get their seldom changing OS that major vendors(like Oracle) will support, and everyday people get Fedora, which has more frequent updates and improvements.
Explore distrowatch.com, I have at least 25 different distros in a nice little CD box, I also have GentooX on my Xbox and if I get a new harddrive for it I'll use Xebian instead.
I advise you to shop around and don't just pick the one everyone else picks hint hint

Yep. It's "Big Brother" now. I wonder how he managed to get "the man" to leave...

It all depends on what you want to do with Linux.

I'm kinda partial to two distributions at the moment:

dynebolic - A very nice "liveCD" distro aimed at media activists (read 'internet radio/tv stations'- includes streaming servers, audio/video editors) and artists (graphics programs, 3D modeling with Blender, etc.). Also includes a slew of other apps for sending email, file sharing, accessing remote desktops and filesystems, burning CDs, etc. Can be installed on a hard disk too. Does a really good job at auto-detecting a lot of audio/video hardware, including some tv cards. I like it so much that I may start up a little internet radio station in the summer. http://www.dynebolic.org/

Mepis Linux - I chose this Debian-based Linux because it was the *only* distro that I have tried lately (out of a group of 30) that successfully incorporated a working battery management program for my laptop without me touching a single thing! That gets a 'thumbs up' just on that alone because I've always had to install/configure/tinker such programs before - never with completely happy results (sucks when the laptop suddenly shuts off because the battery dies and I get no warning about it). Mepis also has a good security setup out-of-the-box, pre-installing a firewall with all the major ports shut off. http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=04/01/28/2334247 gives a good review of Mepis as well as several other Debian-based distros. If you want to use KDE 3.2, which has some nice desktop goodies (like transparancies in the program dock) then wait for the next version to come out in the next few weeks. Otherwise you can download the current version of Mepis and tinker with via the LiveCD. I'm currently using the Mepis 2003.10.02 distro and have had no problems yet. I have not committed to shifting over completely to Mepis (about 80% there) because I'm waiting for the 2004.05 version to come out of Beta status soon. http://www.mepis.org/
I've been having a strange problem, but I feel a Linux-oriented forum is more acceptable for something of this sort.

If you know what you're doing in nix, please give me lookup here:

...and tell me what to do! =D

Thanks,
