I work with a game called "Dragonball Online". It plans on, what else, revolutionizing the Dragonball Z gaming network. We work hard, mentally and physically, and what do we find? Dragonball Online "Zeta" being removed from the BYOND HUB!
Now, I'm not much of a complainer (never really much was), but what the heck happened? You people say that it's a Dragonball Z rip-off, and it is, but why must you ruin the sole experience for us? Before we scrapped the "Zeta" version, we worked hard, and eventually it transformed into a completely new game. If you've played the game, I'm almost quite sure that you wouldn't actually be able to tell that it was a rip-off itself.
So I ask you this ... why would you do something like that? Isn't BYOND a free online environment where-as users can do fulfill whatever their heart desires!?
Our game, Dragonball Online "Zeta", was growingly popular, sometimes reaching up to 50 players. Now you've just gone ahead and killed it, you’ve forced us to link the users to the game directly through our forums and websites, and that my friend ... doesn’t frankly quite attract players. Now, I don't know about you, but you just can't do something like that! You might as well write a law forbidding the use of alcohol and cigarettes, and say: "Sorry folks, we want America to be a good, clean place now!".
The funny thing is, if we never admitted our honesty towards it being a sort-of Zeta rip-off by placing the "Zeta" prefix at our game name, we'd never been removed in the first place!

The funnier thing is, if you never made it a zeta rip-off it'd never have been removed at all. Dragonball Online is possibly the oldest Dragonball game that comes to my mind, except for Dragonball Zeta. This conception dates all the way back when Zeta-ripping was "fine", and "okay" with the moderators. The thing that really ticks me off is that we've put so much work into it, and now it's gone, poof, goodbye. Kiss 2 or 3 years of work into oblivion. |

The hub is a free service that Dantom offers users of BYOND - they don't have to, and it costs them money because of the space it takes, CPU usage, and bandwidth. They could have easily made everyone link to their games via forums and homepages. The HUB is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT.
It is DanTom's decision whether they want certain materials on the hub, since they are paying for it, and working hard on BYOND, just so you can make your games. There are several good reasons why Zeta rips are being removed from the hub (other rips undoubtedly are going to follow) - amongst others. I am sure that one of the hub moderators will come and detail them better than I can. But important is - you still have your game. You still have your players. You can invite them over your pager, or link to your game over your website. Dantom did not take that away. They just do not want to be identified with games based off stolen/ripped code based off of a commercial property (DBZ) which could potentially bring Dan or Tom in trouble in the future. Be thankful that DanTom brought you BYOND, and that you even had the possibility of using the hub to attract loyal players. splatty |
