I am sick of seeing RPGs where monsters just stand there and wait for you to hit them... It might actually be alright if they were placed correctly, but almost all of the games I have seen where they do that, they aren't! Sure it reduces lag, but there are other ways to reduce lag.
Another thing that annoys me about just about every RPG on BYOND, is the fact that there isn't even a friggen setting! An actual storyline can impede some players and are annoying to alot, but at least have a setting. A good example of making the storyline not impede the playing, is everquest. It sets you into an environment rich in history and allows you to unfold your own story (Although stories you unfold yourself are pretty crappy... That is why it is just a "setting".). This pleases both ruthless players who don't care about a story, and players who want something with imagination in it. The RPGs here are just running around killing increasingly difficult monsters!
How can ANY of you kids find standing around just fighting stronger mosnters the further you go, fun at all? Let alone standing around hitting a 1337 pbag all day so you can hit other pvp players and win.
And to top off my annoyance, the RPGs here tend to just send the player in a straight path. No exploring at all. And when the game has at least some minor exploring, they ruin it because the monsters wait for you to attack them, thus making anyone able to explore anywhere!
Uhhg. If I were the owner of BYOND, I would delete that junk from existance and send you a virus (Alright, so I'm not actually that ruthless, but still...).
Anyways, does anyone ever put thought into their RPGs anymore? And is all players care about anymore is how easily they can run around killing weaker people?
And might I add, that in all the years of me being here, I haven't played a single great RPG?

I actually think the Fan Game RPGs far surpass the RPGs here because of the ripped battle systems from actual good games.
That is a scary thought considering I don't like Fan Games because they are based off of other games (Although usually the original game is so much better.). That and I won't even try one if it is anime-based. Icky icky. |
-nods- I guess this is my time to explain why Synthetic Dreams has come to be.
I too was tired of these RPG's on byond, so i decided (With my glorious designing skills.) to make one myself, being sure to include a huge storyline, plot, 4 nations spanning over 150 maps a piece on 4 different servers, EMOTION in the storyline, and still have the freedom to play by your own path. I have a feeling, once i actually get the design docs finished and hire some more coders, that SD will indeed be the console-type RPG of Byond. |

EQ is and was all about running around killing increasingly difficult monsters! when I played it. The only MMORPG i ever really liked was UO of 3 years ago. It was open ended yet, a very deep story. and player interaction was king. There where groups of players that just well liked killing anyting they seen. Then there where groups who where deep RP's. I wish, I could go back in time. free shards don't cut it. thats the kind of MORPG i'm looking for. |
Maybe an idea could be to make an Rpg along the same lines that others intended to go, but simply remove everything that a lot of them have in common...like a whole bunch of stats.
Maybe a character will have HP for different parts of his body, and different pieces of armor required to protect each spot because honestly...it really wouldn't do any good to have some "Supreme Helmet of Invincibility +Infinity" if someone throws an axe at your crotch. And for attacking, instead of generically choosing just an enemy you could also choose where to strike as well, or instead choose to go defensive to protect weaker portions of your body at a cost of offensive ability. If other stats like strength or speed are necessary, allow those to wither a bit if too much focus is placed elsewhere, but also cap gains depending on what is being done with that stat. Someone can train to be big enough for Mr. Universe competitions but if he goes home and lives off of McDonald's for the next 9 months, he wouldn't really be able to slide down and bench press nearly as well as he used to. Plus, you can take two guys of differing strength and give them differently-weighted items to use, but having them switch so that the stronger guy trains with the lighter item won't be helpful. And...I'll just leave this at that. I can't think of more to add. |
I look forward to playing it. I was going to make my own RPG because of this, it was going to have a turn-based RPG, but I realized that I don't like making multi-tile graphics :P I started on a better non-RPG anyways, so it's all good.

If that is all you saw in EQ, then you didn't look hard enough. Like I said, it appeals to both types of players. I read the stories in EQ, and talked to many, many NPCs just for the story effect, etc. and the quests/enemies in it relate to the setting. All RPGs just about are running around killing monsters, but it's what is in-between that that makes the game worth playing, in my oppinion.

Those are all great systems... But the problem is that people put these systems in to cover up that they have no imagination! I will think of an RPG as great even if it is buggy and have the most basic systems, just as long as it is adventurous, has a great setting and is rich in history.

Wildblood? who is he? :) Well hes only one of the best byond game makers I know! I'm sure you know him from Iron Dogs Series or the Scarey game series or Crazy Tank or maybe even Harvest Moon Trinity Ranch. But he has made an RPG as well known as Petz - x. Currently this game is on hold but I have gotten some of the story plot from the game. It seems creative as Wildblood usally is. Sure it has attack and you go around pounding in evil foes. But he has a couple effects in his systems that other rpgs don't do. As his weapon and armor system is alot different than others. Its balanced and not so incremental. With great power comes great cost and in WB's rpg he surly demonstrates that. It also comes with no +AT stats to give away how well the weapon really is doing. Sure there is a weapon were it can kill your monster in one hit or take its hp down quite a ways but you loose the chance too gain xp from the fight. He uses a no seeing xp leveling system. So players don't do number counting in the game. Which is associated with hack/slash to often than not. When some one does level up it makes it loud and clear as little red balls come flying from your mob. Yet doest give away your level. You can see your attack and defence and hp points but only if you use a gizmo stat scanning thingy which cost so much energy. It's actually built more into the game so people can rp with it rather than stats being shown up on the screen. Gadgets are a big part of his game as they can be used for many different things. A small skills system is included in the game along with a laser that can be used to ending your enemies quickly. And a spell system were you have to type in the words and use the right ingredeance to cast a spell. Wb's RPG has more goods than bads for an rpg so I can't wait intell he continues to start making more progress on it :) |
i agree with you totally andi am designing a game to fight those specs called japanese warlords its in very early alpha states but there a quests and so much other fun stuff and my enemies move look for it it is coming out soon =)!
well actually probably 2 or 3 months but still |
I think WB is a good gamemaker. I don't personally like Petz because it reminds me of pokemon... Something I personally don't wan't to return to.

I'm making just the game for you. It's a text mud.
It takes place on an island with zones scattered around. You still fight monsters, but you don't follow a set path and can choose which zones to do. There will be puzzles to solve to get to the end of a zone. It'll have real time fighting, but you won't be able to win unless you think of strategies to beat you opponent. For example, if you change your position to kneeling just before and enemy tries to tackle you to the ground, they will fall over and become an easy target on the ground until they get back up. You can also pick up a clump of dirt and throw it into your enemy's eyes to make them blind, making them hit you alot less. Just some examples of what it will be like, but it will be awhile before it's playable. |
We need more RPGs that don't suck
