I am going to upgrade my computer soon, and I am going from a 60 gig to an 80 gig, but I want windows and all my files to stay the same, only on my 80 gig hard drive. Is there a way to transfer windows and all the files over. I have two partitions on this one, so that might foul things up. Anyone know of a way to do this?
use Norton Ghost if you know how to ghost things and know what im talking about.

Well, does that work on diffrent sized hard drive though? I thought of that, but I was afraid that it wouldnt let me because of the 20gig diffrence.

Im pretty sure it would work in a course at my highschool we used norton ghost to transfer files from a small 30gig hard drive to a 60gig.

They use norton ghost all the time in my school, but never showed us how to use it. I can look into though.

i believe it comes with a help file or you can always use google its your friend ;)
Why not just use both drives... and set the new one up as a Slave? That way you have 140 gigs of space.

Because the 80 gig is going into my new computer, I want this one to still be functional.

Ah, I see... When you said upgrading you PC I thought you meant adding to your current one, not getting a new one all together.

I figured it wouldnt make a diffrence, so why mention it. Basicly, the pc is on its way, but I dont want to lose all my info, and have to start over again. It takes months to get windows set how I like it.

Yeah, I don't know if ghosting the disk is such a good idea though... Considering the new PC will have completly different parts than your old one. Windows XP has a backup feature that may be good for this. I haven't tried it, but I suppose I could test it just for scoobs :P

On top of that, if you don't have a corporate edition of Windows XP your current install just won't work if you copy it over to the hard drive for your new computer.

Not even with ghost? Ok, anyone know a way to move windows setting and possible installed files from 1 computer having windows to another?
In response to Scoobert
Well do you just want the settings for the programs, or the whole installed aplication?

Mostly windows settings, I have about a bijillion changes that would need to be reset. Stuff like "Single click, show this and thats in the start menu, do this when I click this" and stuff like that.

Ah, I see... Well post something over at the MSFN Forums. They're very helpful there, and I'm sure someone will know what to do.
Well, If You watch TheScreenSavers, awhile back *before the merge* they had a segment in which they used an external Harddrive Backup Device. All you had to do was connect it up and it would mirror your main Drive..Or atleast, The file folders... I dont remember details. Ugh, Now with the merge, it's nearly impossible to find the episode OR the Name of the device, or even the device itself in 'the vault' on the new site...http://www.g4techtv.com I"ll continue to look for it and post back if I find it before you do.

Anyways, it ran around 40-50 U.S. Dollars, and was a well recommended backup device.
I used Norton Ghost to transfer my files from an 8 gig to an 80 gig. >_>

Windows XP comes with the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". Maybe give it a try. Hopefully it will find most of your custom changes.
