I was looking up the taliban on wikipedia, to see if it had any information on its activities in the 80's vs the soviets, but funny enough, the article not only doesn't mention that part of history, or its formation by the CIA and funded to fight the soviets, but it doesn't seem to even say about any of its existance prior to its takeover of afganistan in 1996, like it just magically appeared out of nowhere. There is no information on its activities prior to 1996 and has no information of its formation. Wow, covering up for the US government?
Conspiracy!
The Al-Qaeda article mentions US support though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Qaeda

Perhaps someone should point out this omission on the talk page. =)
Yet another instance of my government trying to cover their ass.
I did a report on the Taliban for my English class shortly after 9/11 occured. I found all the information I could starting from when it was created. Basically the 'Taliban' as we know it didn't exist until 1993. If I find my report I'll post it online here for you to read Acebloke.
A guy on whatreallyhappened.com added al the information he had on the world trade center collapsing and how the airlines weren't the cause and the videos dubbed by the government to start the war and several other pieces of important information and Wikipedia removed it the next day.
I think Crispy has nailed it, the information is in Al-Queda, the Taliban was around before them though, in the Al-Queda article they mention the other group that was fighting the soviets to which Osama was part of.

(edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maktab_al-Khadamat )
Wow, covering up for the US government?

What the fuck are you talking about. I mean really...

We fended off afghanistan from the soviets, but we didn't have anything to do with the taliban.

Yet another instance of my government trying to cover their ass.

Why would we need to do that?
Here you go Acebloke, this is the report I was talking about earlier. I created it on October 26, 2001 but I had been collecting data for it over the previous 2 months. If what you say about a 'cover up' is true, then my report and its information is the best thing you can find anymore. Enjoy

Edit: Ack, this is the first rough draft for my report. I distinctly remember a different ending when I had to read this outloud for my speech class. I'll keep searching and see if I can find the final copy of this report.
"In just two years, the Taliban have captured more than two-thirds of Afghanistan from the Mujahedeen warriors who had fought Soviet occupation.(THE ONES WE SUPPORTED) The Taliban's success has much to do with the unpopularity of the Mujahedeen in recent years."

Oh and by the way, the information is waving at you if you run a couple google searches.

LMFAO
Worldweaver's absolutely correct! In the early 80's the Soviets were a much bigger threat than the taliban!

Not to mention there wasn't a taliban yet.
I think Acebloke needs to stick to shitty monotone BYONDcasts rather than pissing off American BYONDers with his snobby anti-American political views.

AMIRITE?
America, Fuck yeah!
WAR IN THE PHILLIPINES.

WHY?

BECAUSE WE GOTTA.
