Most of Gamasutra is like that. Registration is free, though; and while it's annoying, it is worth it.

Why do you have to leave one language to learn another? I'm learning C++ and Java while still doing DM, nothing wrong with that.

Yeah but, what if BYOND shuts down for some reason? then you couldn't use those games anymore. A C++ game could be kept forever.

The BYOND software could still be used without the website. The hub address can be changed in Dream Seeker, and the hub isn't necessary to run games anyway.

Not that BYOND is going to go away any time soon.
